A lace-up V-neck jumper in a chunky, roomy knit

This lace-up V-neck jumper by Italy Moda is the kind you pull on over a T-shirt on a cold morning and keep on all day. A knitted cord runs through the neckline like the lacing of a corset, and the rest is a wide, open knit with long sleeves.

It comes in one size, 69 cm long with a chest of 136 cm according to the maker, in black, brown or beige. The yarn is a blend: 65% acrylic, 17% polyamide, 9% viscose and 9% wool.

The piece: one jumper, three colours

Italy Moda lists this jumper as three models, one per colour: 219209 in black, 219210 in brown and 219468 in beige. The descriptions and the size table are the same for all three, so the only thing you choose is the colour. Our colour button for the beige one says Off White; in the photos it is a warm cream.

The supplier describes a casual sweater of standard length with long sleeves and corset-style lacing at the front. The photos add the rest: a V-neck, dropped shoulders, wide sleeves that narrow into a ribbed cuff and a ribbed hem.

One thing we changed on this page. It used to be called a wool jumper. Wool is 9% of the yarn, so we now call it what it is: a knit with some wool in it.

Who it's for

For you if you like knitwear with room in it. A chest of 136 cm is generous on most bodies, which is how a single size can work for several. On the models it hangs loose from the shoulders and bunches softly at the waist.

It also suits you if plain jumpers bore you a little. The lacing gives the neckline something to look at, and you can tie it tight, leave it open or let the ends hang.

The knit is open enough to show a little of what you wear underneath, most of all in the beige. A plain top in a matching colour solves that.

Yarn and feel: mostly acrylic, with 9% wool

The composition is 65% acrylic, 17% polyamide, 9% viscose and 9% wool. The supplier calls the blend soft and pleasant to the touch and says it gives comfort and warmth on cooler days. We have no reason to doubt that, but we have not measured it, so take it as the maker's word.

What the photos show is a yarn with a light halo, knitted loosely. Jumpers like this trap air, and they also let it through. Think of it as a layer for autumn and for indoors in winter, with a coat on top once it freezes. The supplier gives the weight as 450 g.

Fit and silhouette: wide on top, 69 cm long

There is one size. The maker's table gives a length of 69 cm, a chest of 136 cm and hips of 102 cm. So the body is cut wide and the ribbed hem pulls it in again at the bottom, which gives the slightly balloon shape you see in the photos.

The table does not say how the jumper was measured. Lay a jumper you like flat, measure across the chest, double the number and compare it with 136 cm. If your favourite is far below that, expect this one to sit loose and slouchy on you. If you are close to it, it will fit more like a regular jumper.

Styling: tuck the front, show the lacing

In the photos the black and the brown jumper are tucked into high-waisted black trousers with a belt, and the beige one hangs over wide cream trousers. Both work. The supplier adds that it goes with jeans as well as with a skirt.

Our own habit with a wide knit is to tuck only the front and let the back hang. With straight jeans and ankle boots that gives you a waist without losing the ease. Over a smooth slip skirt the rough knit and the smooth skirt set each other off, and the cord ends fall right where the two meet.

Keep necklaces short or leave them off. The lacing already fills the neckline.

Occasions

The supplier puts this jumper in the everyday, casual corner, and that is where it belongs. Wear it to the office on a day without meetings, on a walk through town on Saturday, or at home when the heating has not caught up yet.

The black one can go out for dinner with a skirt and boots. For anything dressier than that, we would pick a finer knit.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data we receive has no care instructions, so go by the label sewn into the jumper. We would rather say that than guess.

Two habits help with any loose knit. Dry it flat, because a wet jumper on a hanger grows longer. And take rings and bracelets off before you pull it on, since an open knit snags easily.

The wow detail: a neckline you can adjust

The cord is the whole trick. Pull it tight and tie a bow, and the V closes into something neat. Loosen it and the neckline opens and slides a little towards one shoulder. In the photos the ends hang down to the hip, long enough to knot or to leave swinging. It is a small thing, and it means the same jumper can look different on Tuesday than it did on Monday.
