A chunky knit jumper with sleeves that balloon

This is a chunky knit jumper from Italy Moda with a round neck and long sleeves that widen below the elbow and close in a ribbed cuff. It comes in one size, 62 cm long with a chest of 120 cm, so it sits loose on most frames.

One thing first, because this page used to say otherwise: you buy the jumper. The sequin skirt and the other skirts in the photos are styling and are not part of the order.

Italy Moda sells this jumper through a fashion wholesaler in Poland, with a separate model number per colour. There are three colours: grey (203712), beige (203716) and brown (219223). Our colour button for the beige one says "Off White"; in the photos it is a cream.

The supplier describes a smooth knit of standard length with a round neckline and long puffy sleeves, to wear alone or over a shirt. All three colours share one description and one size table, so what you read here holds for each of them.

Who it's for

For you if you like a jumper with volume in the sleeves and none of the fuss of a pattern. The knit is plain, so the shape does the talking.

One size means it will be roomy on a small frame and closer on a larger one. A chest of 120 cm and a length of 62 cm are the only numbers the maker gives. Hold a tape measure around a jumper you already own before you decide.

The knit is open enough that a dark top underneath can show through a light colour. The maker suggests a shirt underneath, and that solves it.

Fabric and feel: an acrylic blend with 9% wool

The maker gives the composition as 65% acrylic, 17% polyamide, 9% viscose and 9% wool. So this is mostly a synthetic yarn with a small share of wool in it. We say that plainly because a fuzzy jumper like this is easily mistaken for something else.

The supplier calls it soft and warm. In the photos the yarn has a halo of fine fibres, the kind that makes a knit look brushed. If your skin reacts to wool, keep the 9% in mind and wear a layer underneath.

Fit and silhouette: wide on top, held at the hip

The body is loose and the hem is ribbed, so the jumper blouses a little above the hip instead of hanging straight. The sleeves are the widest part. They narrow sharply at the cuff, which keeps them out of your plate at dinner.

With one size there is nothing to choose, only something to check. Compare the two measurements below with a jumper you like to wear.

Styling: a soft top over something sharp

The photos pair the jumper with a sequin mini skirt, a black pleated skirt, a checked skirt and dark jeans. The idea behind all four is the same: a big soft top half over a short or straight bottom half.

Tuck only the front of the hem into a skirt and the ribbed edge will hold it there. With jeans, leave it out and push the sleeves up to the elbow; the cuffs are tight enough to stay. Under a coat the sleeves need room, so a cape or a wide-sleeved coat works better than a slim blazer.

Occasions

The supplier names a walk, meeting friends and time at home, on colder days. We would add the office on a Friday and a December dinner, if you put it over a skirt that shines the way the photos do.

It is a jumper for autumn and winter. In a heated room you may want a thin layer underneath that you can sit in once the jumper comes off.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no care instructions, so go by the label sewn into the jumper. We would rather tell you that than guess.

General habits for a fuzzy knit: wash it inside out, dry it flat on a towel so the weight of the water does not pull it longer, and fold it on a shelf instead of hanging it. A coarse open knit catches on rings and bag buckles, so take a little care there.

The wow detail: the sleeve

Follow the sleeve from the neck down. It starts at the collar as a raglan, without a shoulder seam, and keeps growing until just above the wrist. Then the ribbed cuff gathers all of that width at once. When you lift your arm the knit hangs in a soft curve under it. That curve is the reason to buy this jumper and not a straight one.
