This short collarless jacket by Nife is the piece you put on when a blouse and a skirt need finishing. It has no lapels and no visible buttons. The neckline is round with a small notch, and the front hangs open in two clean edges.

It is 53 to 57 cm long, so it stops at the top of the hip. The fabric is 60% polyester, 35% viscose and 5% spandex, and you can choose black or beige in sizes 36 to 44.

Nife describes a short jacket with a classic, simple cut, made to go with soft office outfits. Model 216886 is black and 216887 is beige. We list the beige as Blush Pink, because in the photos it is a pale beige with a pink cast.

The maker's point is that the jacket stays in the background. Its minimalist form leaves room for a patterned skirt, a shirt with an unusual detail or bold jewellery. The photos show the shape well: a straight back with a centre seam, set-in sleeves and a hem that sits just above the skirt's waistband.

Who it's for

For you if a classic blazer feels like too much jacket. This one gives you the same neat shoulders with less fabric, and it doesn't fight with the collar of your blouse.

It suits you if you wear dresses and high-waisted skirts to work. A short jacket shows your waist, where a long one would cover it.

The maker does not mention a closure or a lining. In all six photos the jacket is worn open. If either point decides it for you, ask us and we will check with the supplier.

Fabric and feel: soft to the touch, with some stretch

The blend is 60% polyester, 35% viscose and 5% spandex. The maker calls it a soft-touch material and says the viscose makes it comfortable to wear all day.

In the photos the fabric is matte and smooth and it holds a sharp edge at the front. The spandex gives the sleeves and back a little stretch, which you will notice when you reach for a keyboard or a steering wheel.

Fit and silhouette: straight and short

The maker's table gives a total length and a chest for each size. Size 38 is 54 cm long with a chest of 94 cm. Size 44 is 57 cm long with a chest of 104 cm.

On the model the jacket hangs straight from the shoulder and ends at the top of the hip. Since it is worn open, the chest number is less strict than on a jacket you button. The shoulders matter more. The table has no shoulder width, so your usual blazer size is the most useful guide we have.

Styling: let the rest of the outfit talk

In the photos both colours are worn over a white top with a black pencil skirt and nude pumps. That is the office uniform, and the jacket is made for it.

The maker suggests patterned skirts, shirts with original details and bold jewellery, and we would take that advice. Try the black over a printed midi dress. Wear the beige with wide cream trousers and a chunky necklace, since there is no collar in the way. On Friday, either colour works over a white T-shirt and straight jeans.

Occasions

This is office wear first, and the maker says so. It also earns its place at a job interview, a presentation or a dinner after work.

Over a sleeveless dress it covers your shoulders at a wedding or a christening without hiding the dress.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no care instructions, so go by the label sewn into the jacket.

Between washes, hang it on a shaped hanger and let it air. A jacket you wear over a blouse rarely needs washing after one day.

The wow detail: the notch at the neck

Where the two front edges meet the neckline, the jacket has a small notch, a little V cut into the round. It is easy to miss in a photo. In real life it stops the neckline from looking severe, and it points down the open front to whatever you wear underneath.
