Nife is a womenswear label we buy through a fashion wholesaler in Poland. The supplier's text for model 216888 is brief: an elegant, short jacket in a floral pattern, rounded at the neckline, with a print meant to liven up an outfit. The colour is listed as multicolor.

So most of what follows comes from the four photos. The jacket is worn open in all of them. Its front edges are straight, and along them you can see small gold-tone dots that look like press studs. The supplier does not describe a fastening, so we can't promise that it closes.

The sleeves end a little above the wrist on the model, and the back is a few centimetres longer than the front.

Who it's for

For you if your wardrobe is mostly plain and you want one printed piece that works with what you already own. Navy trousers, a white T-shirt, a black dress: the dark ground of the print sits easily next to all of them.

It also suits you if long blazers swamp you. A jacket that stops at the waist keeps the leg line long, which helps if you are petite.

Fabric and feel: printed polyester with a little stretch

The composition is 97% polyester and 3% spandex. In the photos the fabric looks smooth and fairly firm: the jacket keeps a clean line at the shoulder and the hem does not curl. The print is sharp, with clear edges around the petals.

The small share of spandex gives the fabric some give across the back and at the elbows. The supplier does not state a fabric weight or whether there is a lining, so we leave both open.

Fit and silhouette: straight and short

The maker's table gives two measurements per size. Total length goes from 53 cm in size 36 to 57 cm in size 44, one centimetre per size. The chest goes from 90 cm to 104 cm.

On the model the jacket hangs straight from the shoulder and is not nipped in at the waist. If you plan to wear it open, as in the photos, your usual size is the simple choice. If you hope to close it over a jumper, compare the chest measurement with a jacket you own first.

Styling: pick one colour from the print

The photos show the easy version: a pale pink top that repeats the flowers, slim navy trousers that repeat the ground, and nude pumps. Everything under the jacket is plain, and that is why it works.

You can do the same with the blue-green of the leaves, in a top or a scarf. Over a navy or black dress the jacket turns a simple outfit into something for a party. With jeans and white trainers it loses its formality and becomes a spring jacket for the weekend.

The supplier says the style goes with any outfit. We would name a few. It is a good office jacket for days without meetings in a suit, and a ready answer for a spring wedding, a christening or a garden party, when you want cover for your shoulders without wearing a coat.

The maker's data we receive has no care instructions, so please go by the label sewn into the jacket.

For printed jackets in general: wash inside out if the label allows washing, and hang the jacket on a shaped hanger straight away so the shoulders dry in form.

The wow detail: a print that also covers the back

Look at the back view. The flowers are placed across the shoulder blades and again near the hem, with dark navy between them. From behind the jacket looks as considered as from the front, which is worth something for a piece you will mostly wear open.
