A long quilted winter jacket with a hood you can take off

This is a long quilted winter jacket with a synthetic filling, a lining and a hood with a fur trim. Both the hood and the trim come off, so you can wear it three ways: with everything on, with a bare hood, or with only the high collar.

It closes with a zip and a row of snaps, and it has slip pockets for your hands. The outer fabric is 100% polyester. You can choose from a peach-toned brown, black, dark green and beige, in sizes S to XXL.

The jacket comes from Factory Price, a brand sold through a Polish fashion wholesaler. Each colour is its own model there: 202275 is the brown, 202276 the black, 202277 the green and 203091 the beige. We read all four descriptions and they describe the same jacket.

The maker calls it a quilted winter jacket with an extended cut, meant for everyday outings and for work in autumn and winter. It has a synthetic filling and a lining. In the photos the quilting runs in wide horizontal channels, and when the jacket hangs open you can see a checked lining in beige, black and white.

One thing the four descriptions don't agree on is the length. They say to the knee, before the knee and below the knee. The photos are clearer: on both models the hem ends above the knee.

Who it's for

For you if you cycle or walk to work and want your hips and upper legs covered. A jacket that ends above the knee keeps more of you out of the wind than a short puffer, and you can still get on a bike in it. The side slits at the hem open with snaps, which helps.

It also suits you if you can't decide about fur trims. Some days it looks right, other days it is too much. Here you take it off in a minute.

The maker lists the jacket as 100% polyester and does not say separately what the fur trim is made of. In the photos it looks like faux fur, but we can't confirm that from the data. Ask us if it matters to you and we will put the question to the supplier.

Materials and feel: polyester outside, synthetic filling inside

The outer fabric is polyester with a smooth finish. In the photos it has a soft matte look, without the wet shine some puffers have. The filling is synthetic, so there is no down in it.

The maker says the filling and the length give warmth and protection against the cold. That is the maker's claim. There is no temperature rating in the data, and nothing about rain either, so we won't promise you a dry walk in a downpour. Treat it as a winter jacket for cold, dry days and short showers under an umbrella.

Size and fit: go by the chest and the sleeve

The maker's table gives three measurements per size: the chest, the sleeve along the inside and the sleeve along the outside. Size M has a chest of 86 cm and an outer sleeve of 61 cm. Size XL has 96 cm and 65 cm. There is no body length in the table.

The chest numbers are low for a padded jacket if you read them as the full width around, and the table does not explain how they were measured. So do the comparison yourself: take a winter jacket that fits you over a jumper, measure the sleeve from shoulder seam to cuff, and pick the size with the closest outer sleeve. In the photos the jacket has a straight cut with room for a thick knit underneath.

Styling: let the jacket be the big shape

In the photos one model wears the brown jacket with black flared trousers and heeled ankle boots. The other wears the beige with dark jeans and white sneakers. Both work for the same reason: a long padded jacket is a big block, and a slimmer or darker leg underneath keeps it in balance.

The black is the easy pick if this will be your only winter jacket. The peach-toned brown is the one people will ask about, and it looks good with cream knitwear. Take the fur trim off when you wear a big scarf, otherwise there is too much going on around your face.

When to wear it

The maker made it for everyday outings and for work in autumn and winter, and that is where it belongs: the commute, the school run, the Saturday market, a walk on the beach in January.

It is long enough to go over a dress or a blazer, so you can wear it to the office over smart clothes. For hiking or skiing, look for a jacket with stated technical specs. This one has none.

Care: follow the label, and take the trim off first

The maker's data has no care instructions, so the label sewn into the jacket decides how you wash it. We would rather say that than guess.

Two habits are safe with any padded jacket. Take off the fur trim before washing, since trims usually don't like a machine. And close the zip and the snaps, so they don't catch on the lining.

The wow detail: the checked lining

Closed, it is a plain quilted jacket. Open it in a warm tram and there is a beige check on the inside that nobody expected. It shows along the zip and inside the hood, and it makes the jacket look more thought through than its outside lets on.
