An earlier title on this page said suede. That was too generous. The maker's material field reads imitation leather suede, which is a faux suede. Only the insole is given as leather.

The supplier describes them as boots for the transitional season, which fits an upper with holes in it.

Who they're for

For you if you like a western boot and want a pair for the weeks when full winter boots are too much. The openwork lets air in.

The heel is low enough for a whole day. And because the upper is faux suede, they suit you if you avoid suede from animals, with the note that the insole is leather according to the maker.

Materials and build: faux suede outside, leather insole

Faux suede has the brushed, matte surface of suede without the animal hide. In the photos it is an even, warm brown with a soft nap.

The maker says the leather insole adds comfort and lets air circulate. We pass that on as the maker's description. An openwork shaft is no match for rain or puddles, so keep these for dry days.

Size and dimensions: mind the jump at 39

The insole lengths climb by half a centimetre, except once. Size 38 is 24.5 cm and size 39 is 25.5 cm, a full centimetre more. The other sizes: 23.5 cm in 36, 24 cm in 37, 26 cm in 40 and 26.5 cm in 41.

The shaft is 15 cm, which puts the top edge a hand's width above the ankle. The curved western top line is lower at the sides than at the front and back.

Styling: dresses and jeans

The photos show them with bare legs, which is how the perforation shows most. A floral midi dress and these boots are an easy pair for spring and early autumn.

With jeans, choose a straight or cropped leg that ends above the shaft, or tuck a slim pair in. A coloured sock behind the openwork is a small joke you can allow yourself.

The supplier names the transitional season and both casual and dressier outfits. Think of a festival, a terrace in April, a day at the office with a relaxed dress code.

Care: brush, do not soak

The maker gives no care instructions. For faux suede in general: let mud dry, then brush it off with a soft brush, and dab stains with a barely damp cloth. Don't soak the boots, and let them dry at room temperature.

Rows of small diamonds are cut out of the shaft, and from a distance the pattern looks like lace. Up close it is a western boot that lets the light through.
