A wrap-neck midi dress in matte or glitter

This midi dress by Numoco has a crossover neckline, short butterfly sleeves, a wide waistband and a skirt that flares to the knee. It closes with a concealed zip at the back.

You choose between two fabrics with the same composition. One is matte and slightly stretchy. The other is stretchy with a fine glitter thread. Together they come in 11 colours.

The piece: one cut, two fabrics, 11 colours

Numoco sells this dress through a fashion wholesaler in Poland, and each colour has its own model number. The supplier calls it a Polish product. All 11 share the same short description: a flared dress with an envelope neckline and short sleeves.

Five models are in the matte fabric: bottle green, navy blue, burgundy (our button says "red"), beige and light blue ("blue"). Six are in the glitter fabric: dusty pink, a sea blue ("navy blue 2"), green ("green 2"), dark navy ("navy blue 3"), bright red ("red 2") and "Taupe". The photos follow the order of the colour buttons, so the picture that appears when you click a colour is the dress you get.

The newest model, the light blue, comes with a fuller description from the maker. It names the butterfly sleeves, the wide band at the waist and the concealed zip. The photos show the same details on every colour.

Who it's for

For you if you have an invitation and want a dress that marks the waist and lets the skirt move. The sleeves cover the top of the arm and the hem covers the knee, which makes it easy to wear in front of family.

The neckline is a deep V at the front and a V at the back. If you prefer less, a small pin at the crossover closes it by a few centimetres.

Fabric and feel: the same fibres, two finishes

Both fabrics are 95% polyester with 5% spandex. The matte one is described as slightly stretchy. In the photos it is smooth and even in colour, and the skirt falls in broad folds.

The other is described as stretchy and shiny. In the photos it shimmers with a fine glitter over the whole dress, which makes the colour look lighter where the light hits it. It is the party version. If you want the dress for the office as well, the matte fabric is the calmer choice.

Fit and silhouette: fitted to the waist, then free

The bodice and the waistband are fitted and the skirt is not. So the waist is the measurement that decides your size. In the matte fabric it runs from 62 cm in XS to 82 cm in XL. In the glitter fabric it is narrower from S up: 66, 70, 74 and 78 cm.

The chest is the same in both versions up to size L, from 74 to 86 cm, and both fabrics stretch. If you are between sizes in the glitter version, take the larger one.

Styling: small bag, bare neckline

In the photos the model carries a small clutch and wears bracelets and heeled sandals. A thin chain sits in the V. That is about the right amount.

With the glitter fabric, keep jewellery fine and let the dress shine. With the matte fabric you have more room: a belt over the waistband, larger earrings, a coloured shoe. A cropped jacket that ends at the waistband keeps the shape visible.

Occasions

The maker suggests a wedding, a communion, a romantic dinner or another special occasion. The supplier files it under evening dresses. The matte colours also suit a daytime ceremony, and the beige and light blue are good choices for spring.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no care instructions, so go by the label sewn into the dress. We would rather tell you that than guess.

A general habit for dresses with a full skirt: hang them up straight after washing so the folds drop out by themselves, and close the zip first.

The wow detail: the sleeves

The sleeves are short and cut in a soft curve, so they lift away from the shoulder like small wings. They move when you walk and when you reach for something. On a dress with a fitted waist and a deep neckline, they add a light touch at the top.
