First a correction. This page used to carry a title about a tiered maxi sundress with thin straps. That was wrong. The dress the supplier ships, and the one in the photos, is a short satin dress with long sleeves. Everything on this page now describes that dress.

The maker files it under evening dresses and describes it as an elegant satin dress with an envelope neckline. Dirty pink is the colour you can order.

Who it's for

For you if you want a party dress for the cold months that covers your arms and still looks like a party. Long sleeves in satin do that well.

Be honest with yourself about the fit. This is a dress that follows every curve, in a fabric that reflects light. If that is what you are after, it delivers. If you would rather skim than cling, a wrap dress in a matte fabric will make you happier.

The size table gives a length of 95 to 96 cm. On the model the hem sits clearly above the knee. The ruching gathers the skirt upwards, so expect it to wear shorter than the number suggests.

Fabric and feel: stretch satin

The dress is made of satin with a little stretch: 95% polyester and 5% elastane. Satin is a weave with long floating threads on the surface, and that is where the shine comes from.

In the photos the fabric is glossy and smooth, and it shows the folds of the ruching as bright and dark bands. Shiny satin also shows water drops and seams of underwear, so plain, smooth underwear is the practical choice. The supplier lists the weight at 650 grams.

Fit and silhouette: close, with a caveat about the table

The maker's table gives size M a chest of 84 cm and a waist of 70 cm, and size XL a chest of 92 cm and a waist of 80 cm. Those numbers match a close fit.

The hip column is odd. It runs from 76 cm in S to 88 cm in XL, smaller than the chest in every size. On a dress that is tight over the hips, that cannot be a body measurement. Our guess is that it was taken on the unstretched garment. Go by chest and waist, count on the elastane for the hips, and message us if you are unsure.

Source: the maker's size table. It does not say how the figures were measured, and the hip numbers are smaller than the chest numbers, which is unusual. Treat the table as a guide and compare it with a fitted stretch dress you own.

Styling: let one thing sparkle

The model wears long sparkling earrings, a watch and thin-strap sandals. The earrings are the right idea. With a deep V and long sleeves there is a lot of fabric, and one bright point near the face balances it.

Sheer tights and pointed pumps make it December-proof. A long coat that covers the hem looks better over a short dress than a jacket that ends at the hip. Keep the bag small.

Occasions

This is an evening dress: Christmas drinks, New Year's Eve, a birthday in a bar, a date. The dirty pink is softer than red and stands out among all the black of the party season.

For a wedding it depends on the crowd. The colour is fine, but the length and the neckline are bold, so save it for the evening party.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no washing instructions, so follow the label sewn into the dress.

General advice for satin: wash it inside out, keep it away from rough fabrics and velcro in the drum, and steam it from the inside. Rings and bracelets with sharp edges can pull threads on the sleeves.

The wow detail: ruching that catches the light

Satin on a flat surface is just shiny. Gather it into folds and every ridge lights up while every valley goes dark. The ruching along the sides of this skirt does exactly that, and it runs into the two curved panels of the hem. It is the reason the dress looks so alive in photos.
