A chiffon midi dress with a lace bodice, in five colours

This chiffon midi dress by Numoco is the one you buy for a wedding and keep wearing afterwards. The top is lace with short sleeves and a V-neck, the skirt is chiffon and flares out from a pleated waistband.

It comes in bottle green, cornflower blue, maroon, navy blue and powder pink. The maker's size table gives a length of 104 cm in S and 109 cm in L and XL, which puts the hem below the knee on the model.

Numoco is a Polish occasion-wear label, and the supplier states "Polish production" for this dress. Each colour has its own model number, from 167992 for the green to 215906 for the pink, but the cut, the composition and the size table are identical.

The supplier describes it as a chiffon dress with short sleeves, a lace neckline and a cutout at the back. The photos show how that looks: the lace covers the whole bodice and the sleeves, the neckline has a scalloped edge, and the back has a small opening below the neck.

A note on our colour buttons: "red" is the maroon and "green" is a deep bottle green, darker than the word suggests.

Who it's for

For you if you have an invitation on the fridge and no idea what to wear. A covered shoulder, a hem below the knee and a skirt you can dance in solve most dress codes in one go.

It also suits you if you like a defined waist. The waistband sits high and the skirt takes over from there. Sizes run from S to XL, with a waist of 66 cm in S and 78 cm in XL.

The maker's data does not mention a zip or a lining. In the photos the lace on the bodice lies over a layer in the same colour, so no skin shows through there.

Fabric and feel: chiffon below, lace above

The maker gives one composition for the whole dress: 95% polyester and 5% spandex. It does not split that between the lace and the chiffon.

Chiffon is a thin, matte woven fabric that moves easily. In the photos the skirt lifts when the model holds it out and falls back in soft folds, which tells you there is a lot of fabric in it. The lace has a floral pattern and a slightly raised edge along the neckline. The spandex in the mix gives the fitted top some stretch.

Fit and silhouette: fitted top, wide skirt

The bodice is fitted and the skirt is wide, so chest and waist are the two numbers that matter. Size M has a chest of 90 cm and a waist of 70 cm; size XL has 98 and 78 cm. The table has no hip measurement, and with a skirt this wide you don't need one.

Length goes from 104 cm in S to 107 cm in M and 109 cm in L, and XL stays at 109 cm. The table does not say whether these are garment or body measurements. Measure a fitted dress you own across the chest and the waist, double both and compare.

Styling: nude shoes, small bag

In the photos every colour is worn the same way: nude heeled sandals, a small clutch, a fine necklace. It is a sensible formula for a dress with this much lace near the face.

The navy and the maroon take gold-tone jewellery well. The powder pink looks fresh with white or pale shoes. For the bottle green, try black sandals and a black clutch in the evening. If the party runs late, a short jacket or a wrap that stops at the waistband keeps the shape of the dress visible.

Occasions

The supplier names weddings, receptions, a communion, a date or an elegant outing, and that list is right. This is a guest dress. It is dressed up enough for the ceremony and easy enough for the party afterwards.

The darker colours also work for a Christmas dinner or a concert. The pink is the daytime one: a baptism, a garden party, a graduation.

The maker's data we receive has no care instructions, so please go by the label sewn into the dress. We would rather tell you that than guess.

One general habit for lace: keep it away from rings, bracelets and open zips in the wash, because the threads catch easily.

The wow detail: the edge of the neckline

The V-neck is not cut straight. The lace ends in small scallops, so the edge against your skin is a row of soft curves. It is a small thing, and it is the reason the dress photographs so well from the front. Turn around and the lace back with its little opening does the same job from behind.
