Take your favourite hoodie, make it long enough to be a dress, and you have this piece by Rue Paris. It is an oversized hoodie sweatshirt midi dress in black, with a hood, pockets in the side seams and long sleeves.

The fabric is 90% cotton and 10% spandex. On the model the hem falls well below the knee, and a zip at the bottom lets you open one side into a slit when you want more room to walk.

Rue Paris files this under day dresses, and the supplier describes it as a mix of comfort and a clean, minimal design. That is a fair summary. There is no print on the body and no drawcord hanging from the hood in the photos, only a plain black column of sweatshirt fabric.

Two details break the calm. The first is a rectangular patch with white print on the upper left sleeve. The second is the zip at the hem, which the supplier says adds character. In the photos it runs up along one side, so closed it is a line of metal teeth and open it becomes a slit.

The page used to offer a beige version too, and you still see it in the gallery. The wholesaler no longer supplies that colour, so we only describe and sell the black one here.

Who it's for

For you if you want to feel as comfortable as in a tracksuit and still look dressed. A hoodie dress does that with one garment, which is handy on days when you have no wish to think about an outfit.

It comes in two double sizes. S/M is listed for a chest of 82 to 86 cm and L/XL for 91 to 96 cm. Because the cut is wide on purpose, you have room either way.

Fabric and feel: cotton sweatshirt with stretch

The composition is 90% cotton and 10% spandex. That is a high share of cotton for a sweatshirt dress, and you can expect it to feel like a good jogging sweater: soft, a bit heavy, matte.

The spandex gives the fabric stretch, so the cuffs and the hem spring back after you push up your sleeves. The supplier says the long sleeves keep you comfortable on colder days. We have no data on the weight of the fabric or on whether the inside is brushed, so we will not promise either.

Fit and silhouette: wide on purpose

The cut is oversized. It hangs straight from the shoulders and does not mark the waist, which you can see in every photo. The maker's table gives ranges that read like body measurements: chest 82 to 86 cm and waist 72 to 86 cm for S/M, chest 91 to 96 cm and waist 84 to 96 cm for L/XL.

Are you between the two? Then think about how you like your hoodies. S/M will sit closer to a normal sweatshirt fit, L/XL gives you the roomy look from the photos. The table has no length. On the model the hem lands between knee and mid-calf.

Styling: boots, mostly

The photos show the idea. The black dress is worn with black heeled sock boots, which makes it look sharp enough for a city day. The beige one in the gallery is paired with chunky boots, and that works for the black as well if you want it tougher.

White sneakers and a jeans jacket turn it into a weekend outfit. When it gets cold, a long coat that ends near the hem keeps the line clean. Open the zip a little when you wear high boots, so the boot shaft shows as you walk.

Occasions

The supplier names relaxed days and informal get-togethers. We would add working from home, a long train ride and the school run. It is a dress for days when you move around a lot and sit a lot.

For a dinner or the office you may find the hood too sporty. That depends on your office.

Cotton sweatshirt fabric in general keeps its colour longer when you wash it inside out with similar colours. Close the zip at the hem before it goes in the machine, so the teeth do not catch on other clothes.
