Nife is a womenswear label we buy through a fashion wholesaler in Poland. The supplier's description of model 216900 is short: black trousers fastened with snaps, with a tailored cut, for office outfits, in a material that is pleasant to the touch.

The photos fill in the shape. The waist is high, with a wide waistband and two snaps one above the other. The leg is slim and narrows towards the ankle, where it ends in a turned-up cuff. There are slanted side pockets, and a pressed crease runs down the front of each leg.

Who it's for

For you if you wear black trousers to work most days and want a pair with a clean line and no fuss. The tailored cut follows the body, and the supplier says it brings out feminine shapes.

The ankle length suits pumps, loafers and ankle boots alike. If you are tall, the cropped look will be more pronounced. If you are petite, they may reach your shoe like full-length trousers.

The supplier's text does not mention the pockets or the cuffs; we describe them from the photos. It also says nothing about a lining or the country of production.

Fabric and feel: polyester with viscose and a little stretch

The maker lists 74.8% polyester, 23.1% viscose and 2.1% spandex, and describes the material as pleasant to the touch, with a touch of viscose for comfort. Viscose softens a polyester suiting fabric and lets it drape, and the small share of spandex gives the waist and the knees some give.

In the photos the fabric is a smooth, matte black that holds a crease. That is what you want from office trousers: they look pressed at five in the afternoon.

Fit and silhouette: high waist, slim leg, ankle length

The table below is the maker's. Size 38 has a waist width of 80.5 cm, a hips width of 100 cm and a length of 90 cm. Each size adds 4 cm in width and half a centimetre in length.

One column needs a warning. The table labels it inseam and gives 22.5 to 24.5 cm. That can't be the inside leg of trousers that are about 90 cm long, so it is probably the rise, the distance from the crotch seam to the waistband. We show the numbers as the maker gives them. If the real inside leg matters to you, ask us and we will check with the supplier.

Styling: let the blouse have the colour

In the photos the trousers are worn with a printed blouse with a bow in one set and a soft pink blouse in the other, tucked in, with black pumps. Black trousers with a high waist are a good base for a blouse with character.

For a formal day, add a black blazer and you have a suit. For a relaxed one, a striped T-shirt and white trainers work, because the turned-up cuff already makes the trousers a little less strict. A belt is not needed; the waistband is the feature.
