These are wide-leg trousers with a side stripe: one blue line down the outside of each leg, from the waistband to the hem. The waist is high, the legs are wide, and the fabric is a stretchy polyester with 5% spandex.

The colour names need a note. The supplier lists two of the four as beige. In the photos one of those is a warm cream and the other is white. The one the supplier calls brown is a light camel in the photos. The side stripe is the same muted blue on all four.

For you if you like the comfort of a wide leg and want something sharper than joggers. The stripe borrows from a tracksuit; the pleats and the high waist come from tailoring.

Fabric and feel: polyester with stretch

The composition is 95% polyester and 5% spandex. The supplier describes the material as elastic and says it adapts to the figure. In the photos the cloth is smooth and matte, and it hangs in a clean line from hip to hem.

The cream and the white are light colours in a fabric of unknown weight. The supplier doesn't mention a lining, so plan on skin-tone underwear with those two.

Size and fit: two sizes, no chart

We have to be straight about this. The supplier lists two sizes, S/M and M/L, and a size table with columns for hip and waist width but no numbers in them. So we can't give you a waist, a hip or a leg length in centimetres.

What the photos show: the waistband sits at the waist and is elasticated at the back, which gives some room. The legs are long. On the model, who wears heels, they cover most of the shoe. If you are shorter or wear flats, expect to take up the hem. Send us your waist and inside-leg measurements and we will ask the supplier before you order.

Styling: repeat the blue once

The photos pair every colour with pointed heels, and in three of the four sets the shoes are blue, the same blue as the stripe. That is the trick. Pick up the stripe once, in shoes or a bag, and the outfit looks planned.

On top, the model wears short things: a cropped blazer with the black and the white, a fitted tank or a bandeau with the cream and the camel. A high waist and a wide leg ask for a top that ends at the waistband or tucks in.

One general tip for trousers with a contrast stripe: wash the light colours on their own the first time, in case the stripe gives off dye.

The stripe runs without a break from the waistband to the floor. On a wide leg that long vertical line does a lot: it gives the eye something to follow and makes the leg look longer than it is. On the cream and the white pair it stands out. On the black it is quieter and you notice it when you walk.
