These are flat sandals with a toe post and a squared-off front. What you notice first is the ornament: a large, irregular ring in a polished gold colour that lies across the top of the foot.

They come in black, white, gold and silver, in sizes 36 to 43. The supplier says they fit true to size.

The sandals are sold under the label Adorable Flats. Our supplier lists the heel as flat, the fit as true to size and the materials as rubber and PVC.

Two points need saying. The supplier's title calls these "metal" sandals, yet its material list names only rubber and PVC. So we cannot tell you what the ring is made of; it is gold-coloured and shiny in the photos. And the photos show pairs in a cardboard box, while the spec says the box is not included. Expect them to arrive without one.

Who they're for

For you if you live in flats all summer and want one pair that looks dressed. The ring does the work of jewellery, so the sandal carries a plain outfit by itself.

A toe post is not for everyone. If the strap between the toes bothers you on other sandals, it will here too.

Materials and build

Rubber and PVC are both man-made and can be wiped clean. The supplier does not say which part is which. The footbed in the photos looks lightly padded with a fine crinkle in the surface, and the sole is thin.

Size: true to size, 36 to 43

The supplier advises your usual size. Its chart gives a foot length per size, from 22.9 cm for size 36 to 26.4 cm for size 43, converted from inches and rounded to one decimal.

On a square-toe sandal the footbed is meant to show a little beyond the toes. If your foot is right at the top of a size, go one up so your toes do not reach the edge.

Styling: let the hem fall over them

In the photos they sit under wide jeans with a frayed hem, so only the square toe and the ring show. Long skirts and wide trousers give the same effect.

White and black are the everyday pair. The gold and silver ones have a crinkled shine and suit an evening on holiday. Keep other jewellery at the feet to a minimum; the ring is enough.

Occasions

Holidays, terraces, summer dinners, the walk from the pool to the restaurant. They are too thin-soled for a long city walk.

Care

The supplier gives no care instructions. Wipe the footbed and strap with a soft damp cloth and dry the ring afterwards so it keeps its shine. Store them out of direct sun.

The ring is not a neat circle. It is an uneven oval, thicker on one side, like a pebble with a hole worn through it. That irregular, hand-shaped look is what lifts a plain flat sandal into something people ask about.
