These fluffy mule slippers by Step in Style are all pile. Long, shaggy hairs cover the whole upper, the toe is closed, the heel is open and the sole is 2 cm high.

They come in a grey-beige and in black, in sizes 36 to 41. The maker made them for cold days at home.

The piece: a mule for indoors

Step in Style describes these as women's slippers for warmth and comfort on cold days, with soft fur that wraps around the feet. The maker pictures them on winter evenings and by the fireplace.

In the photos they look like two small, long-haired animals. The pile is several centimetres long and falls over the edge of the sole, so from above you see no shoe at all. You step in from the back; there is nothing to close.

The beige pair, which sits under our button Taupe, has darker tips on the hairs. The black pair is black from pile to sole.

Who they're for

For you if you have cold feet from October onwards and like your slippers to be a bit of a joke as well. These are not discreet.

One thing you should know. The maker's data lists the material as 'fur' and does not say whether it is real or imitation. We do not know, and we will not guess. If that decides it for you, ask us before you order and we will put the question to the supplier.

The maker does not say what the sole is made of or whether it is meant for outdoor use. We would keep them indoors.

Materials and build: what we know and what we do not

The maker gives the same word three times: fur for the outside, fur for the lining and fur for the footbed. That tells you the slipper is pile inside and out, so your foot rests on a soft layer and is covered by one.

It does not tell you the fibre. There is no composition in the supplier data and nothing on whether the pile comes from an animal. The sole is 2 cm high; its material is not given.

Size and fit: these run short

Look at the insole lengths before you pick your usual size: 22.5 cm for 36, 23 cm for 37, 23.5 cm for 38, 24 cm for 39, 24.5 cm for 40 and 25 cm for 41. That is shorter than most shoes in the same size.

With an open heel a slightly short insole is less of a problem than in a closed shoe, but your heel should still land on the footbed. Measure your foot and choose the insole that is at least as long. Which sizes are in stock per colour you see on the size buttons.

Styling: bare ankles

In the photos the slippers are worn on bare feet, with bare ankles, and that is how the pile shows up most. Cropped lounge trousers, leggings or a nightdress leave room for it.

Long wide pyjama legs will sweep over the hairs and flatten them. Roll the hem once and the problem is gone.

Occasions

These are for home. Winter evenings on the sofa, slow weekend mornings, working from the kitchen table with cold tiles underfoot. They also make an easy present in December for the friend who is always cold.

Care: keep them dry

The maker's data has no care instructions, and because the fibre is unknown we will not suggest a washing method. Keep the slippers dry, shake them out now and then and comb the pile loose with your fingers when it mats.

The wow detail: the tips of the hairs

On the beige pair every hair ends in a darker tip. It gives the pile depth, a bit like the coat of a husky, and it is why that pair looks grey from one side and sandy from the other. The black pair skips the effect and goes for one deep colour.
