A two-piece co-ord set: a ribbed dress and the hoodie that goes over it

Makadamia sells these two together. A sleeveless ribbed dress that follows the body down to mid-calf, and a short, wide hooded jacket in thicker sweatshirt fabric that you snap shut over it.

The dress is 122 cm long and the jacket 58 cm. Both are 90% cotton with 10% spandex. There is one size, and the set can be ordered in black.

The supplier's text opens with one set, many possibilities, and for once that is fair. It describes a sleeveless striped dress that fits the silhouette and has a side slit, and a hoodie with a hood and snaps in a loose, oversized cut, made of thicker sweatshirt material with ribbed cuffs and hem.

Two small clarifications from the photos. The stripes are the ribs of the knit; the dress is one plain colour. And the supplier's text mentions a zip in one place and snaps in another. The photos show snaps.

The gallery includes grey, brown and light beige sets. Only the black one is still supplied.

Who it's for

For you if you like a fitted dress and want a layer for when you feel too exposed or too cold. The wide jacket covers the arms and the waist and leaves the long line of the dress below.

The dress is a close fit in a stretchy rib, and there is one size. The maker gives no body size range, so if you are unsure, ask us before you order.

Fabric and feel: cotton with 10% spandex

The maker gives one composition for the set: 90% cotton and 10% spandex. The two pieces use it differently. The dress is a thin rib that stretches, and the jacket is what the maker calls thicker sweatshirt material.

We have no fabric weights. A thin rib dress shows underwear lines, so smooth underwear without seams is the easy fix.

Size: one size, read the numbers with care

The table gives the jacket a length of 58 cm and a chest of 120 cm, which confirms the oversized cut. The dress is 122 cm long.

For the dress the table lists a chest of 60 cm, a waist of 56 cm and hips of 64 cm. Nobody has those measurements, so they must describe the rib at rest. On the model the dress fits closely from chest to calf.

Styling: together, or each on its own

The maker suggests wearing the dress alone on warm days and adding the jacket when it cools down. In the photos both versions are worn with white trainers.

The jacket also works over high-waisted jeans, and the dress under a long coat with ankle boots. In all black, the set is easy to dress up with gold-tone jewellery.

Occasions

The maker names work, a walk and quick shopping. We would add travel: a dress and a jacket that match take the thinking out of a weekend bag.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no care instructions, so follow the labels sewn into both pieces.

A general habit: close the snaps before washing and wash the two pieces together, so the blacks stay the same shade.

The wow detail: big over small

The set works because the two pieces are opposites. The jacket is short and full, with sleeves that balloon. The dress is long and narrow. Put together, the proportions do the styling for you.
