A black satin maxi dress with a wrap neckline and a high slit

This is a black satin maxi dress for the evenings that come with an invitation. Numoco gave it a wrap neckline, a belt at the waist and a slit that opens high on the leg. It has no sleeves, and in the photos the skirt reaches the floor.

The maker's size table puts the length at 146 cm in sizes S and M, 148 cm in L and 150 cm in XL. The fabric is 95% polyester with 5% spandex, and according to Numoco the dress was made in Poland.

Numoco says the dress was made in Poland, and the wholesaler files it in the evening category. The maker describes it as a long satin dress in a deep shade of black, with an envelope neckline, a high slit on the leg and a waist marked by a belt.

The photos fill in the rest. The top crosses over at the front into a V and is held in soft pleats. The straps are wide, more like a sleeveless top than spaghetti straps. The belt is cut from the same satin and ties in a bow at the back, with ends long enough to hang halfway down the skirt.

Below the waist the skirt opens out and falls in folds. When the model stands still the slit mostly closes. When she steps forward it opens from the thigh down.

Who it's for

For you if you have a gala, a formal wedding or a company dinner coming up and you want a long black dress that does not need much thinking. The wrap top and the belt give the dress its shape, so the cut does the work for you.

It is also for you if you like to show a little leg and keep your back covered. The back is closed up to the neck in the photos, which means a normal bra works underneath. Sizes run from S to XL.

Two things are missing from the maker's data: how the dress closes, and whether it is lined. The photos don't settle either question. Ask us before you order if you need to know, and we will check with the supplier.

Fabric and feel: satin with 5% spandex

The composition is 95% polyester and 5% spandex, in a satin weave. Satin has a smooth face that reflects light, and you can see that in the photos: the skirt shines softly along the folds and stays darker in between.

The spandex gives the fabric a little stretch, which helps around the wrap top. Black satin shows water drops and creases more than a matte fabric does, so give it a steam before the evening and sit down carefully on the way there.

Fit and silhouette: fitted top, wide skirt

The top follows the body and the belt pulls the waist in. From there the skirt has plenty of room, so your hips don't decide the size. Go by the chest and the waist.

The maker's table lists a chest of 74 cm in S, 80 cm in M, 84 cm in L and 88 cm in XL, with a waist of 70 to 84 cm. Those are small numbers if you read them as body measurements, and the table does not explain how they were taken. A wrap top and a tie belt do adjust to you, but we would not guess. Measure a dress you own, or send us your measurements and we will ask the supplier.

Then the length. 146 cm is long. The model wears heels and the hem still touches the floor, so if you are not tall, plan on heels or a visit to the tailor.

Styling: one thing at the neck, one at the feet

The model wears clear-strap heels, a pendant that falls into the V and a watch. We would copy the first two and swap the watch for a bracelet.

Because the slit shows your shoes with every step, they matter more than usual. Strappy sandals in black or metallic look right. For the cold walk from the car, a cropped jacket or a wide scarf over bare shoulders works better than a long coat, which hides the bow at the back.

Wear your hair up if you can. The wrap neckline and the high back both look cleaner with the neck free.

Occasions

Numoco suggests it for evening outings, elegant receptions and special occasions. In practice that means a gala, a black-tie wedding, an opera night or the Christmas dinner at a place with cloth napkins.

It is a floor-length dress with a high slit, so it is a lot for a birthday in a living room. If the invitation says cocktail, a knee-length dress will feel more at home.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data we receive has no care instructions. Please follow the label sewn into the dress. We would rather tell you that than make up a washing temperature.

For satin in general: steam it instead of pressing the shiny side flat, hang it on a wide hanger, and tie the belt loosely in storage so it doesn't crease in one spot.

The wow detail: the bow you only see when you leave

From the front it is all neckline and slit. Turn around and there is a satin bow at the waist with two long ends that move against the skirt when you walk. We like that the dress saves something for the back, since that is the side people see when you cross a room.
