An oversized knit jumper with big sleeves and a round neck

This oversized knit jumper from Och Bella is short in the body and generous everywhere else. The sleeves balloon out and are caught in ribbed cuffs, the shoulders drop, and the neck is a plain round one with a narrow rib.

It comes in one size, 58 cm long with a 140 cm chest according to the maker, and in two colours: a camel brown and a cream. The yarn is mostly acrylic, 70%, blended with polyamide, lana and viscose.

Och Bella is a label sold through a Polish fashion wholesaler. The maker describes this as a women's sweater with a casual character, for everyday wear and for work, with a smooth pattern and a minimalist look. Both colours share one description and one size table.

Smooth is the right word. There are no cables or textures here, just a plain knit in a thick, slightly fuzzy yarn. In the photos the stitches are loose enough that you can see the knit structure, and in the cream version a little light comes through.

Our old title called this a mock-neck pullover. The photos show a round neck, so we changed it.

Who it's for

For you if you wear high-waisted trousers or skirts and want a jumper that stops at the waistband instead of covering it. At 58 cm this one ends around the hip, and the ribbed hem makes it easy to tuck the front in.

It is also for you if turtlenecks feel tight around your throat. The round neck leaves room for a shirt collar or a fine roll-neck top underneath on colder days.

The maker lists the second colour as beige. In the photos it is a cream white, so that is what we call it. The brown is a warm camel.

Yarn and feel: a soft blend, mostly acrylic

The composition is 70% acrylic, 12% polyamide, 9% lana and 9% viscose. Lana is the word in the maker's data and we pass it on unchanged. If you react to animal fibres, ask us before you order and we will check what it stands for.

The maker says the blend gives softness and comfort for a whole day of wear. From the photos we can add that the yarn has a brushed, slightly hairy surface and that the knit is open. An open knit lets air through, so think of this as a layer for indoors and mild days, with a coat over it once it gets properly cold.

Fit and silhouette: short and wide

One size, 58 cm long, 140 cm around the chest. That is a short, boxy shape. On the model the shoulder seam sits well down the upper arm and the sleeve fills out before the cuff pulls it in at the wrist.

How oversized it looks depends on you. To compare, measure a jumper you own flat across the chest and double the number. Most regular jumpers come out far below 140 cm, so expect a lot of room. The length is the part to check if you are tall: 58 cm will sit at or above the hip bone.

Styling: show the waistband

Both looks in the photos do the same thing. The front of the jumper is tucked in so the belt shows, once with khaki cargo trousers and brown ankle boots, once with wide taupe trousers and a black belt. With this much volume on top, showing your waist keeps you from disappearing in it.

The camel looks good with olive, cream and dark jeans. The cream is lovely with grey tailored trousers, though you will need a skin-tone top underneath because of the open knit. Push the sleeves up a little and let the cuffs hold them. That is where the balloon shape shows.

Occasions

The maker names everyday wear and work, and the jumper fits both. With tailored trousers it is tidy enough for the office. With jeans it is a Saturday jumper.

We would not pick it for cycling in a storm or for anything where the sleeves get in the way, like cooking for eight. Those sleeves want a calm day.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no care instructions. Go by the label sewn into the jumper. With a blend of four fibres we are not going to guess.

Two things are safe for any loose knit. Dry it flat, so the weight of the water does not pull it longer. And take off rings and bracelets when you put it on, because open stitches catch on them.

The wow detail: the sleeves

Everything else about this jumper is quiet. Then there are the sleeves, which are almost as wide as the body and collapse into soft folds above the cuff. When you lift a cup of coffee the whole sleeve moves. It is a small pleasure, and it is the reason to choose this one over a plain crew neck.
