Buckle block heels pumps with a strap that keeps them on

The trouble with a classic pump is that it slips. A strap over the instep solves that, and it is the whole charm of the Mary Jane: a round toe, one strap, one small buckle.

These have a mid heel and a small platform under the forefoot. The upper is PU leather, the sole rubber. Choose ivory with a black heel or plain black, in EU sizes 35 to 42.

The photos show a heel that is wide where it meets the shoe and narrows towards the ground, and a sole that is a little thicker under the ball of the foot.

Materials and build: PU leather on rubber

PU leather is faux leather; there is no animal hide in it. In the photos it has a smooth, slightly glossy surface. The sole is rubber according to the supplier. The lining is not described; on the ivory pair the inside looks light pink.

Size and fit: true to size, says the supplier

The supplier's advice is to order your usual size. The chart backs that up with foot lengths: 22.4 cm for 35, 23.4 cm for 37, 24.4 cm for 39 and 25.9 cm for 42.

The strap closes with a buckle, so there is some adjustment over the instep. No heel height in centimetres is given.

Styling: jeans, skirts and socks

The photos show them with cropped jeans. They are just as good with a pleated skirt or a dress to the knee. Mary Janes also take a thin sock or tights, which stretches their season. The ivory pair with its black heel looks graphic with black-and-white outfits.

Care: no instructions from the supplier

The supplier gives no care instructions. Faux leather is usually wiped with a soft damp cloth; on the ivory pair, do that soon after a mark appears. General advice, not a supplier instruction.

On the ivory pair the heel and the sole are black. It is a two-tone idea borrowed from old dance shoes, and it makes the foot look neat because the dark base visually disappears against the floor.
