These are ankle boots in the combat-boot tradition: a round toe, laces to the top and a thick black sole with a deep tread. The upper is a dark chocolate brown with a slight gloss, finished with a black padded collar.

They come in brown only, in sizes 35 to 42, and the supplier says they fit true to size.

The boots are sold under the label Elegant Steps. Our supplier lists PU leather and rubber as materials, a mid heel and a true-to-size fit. PU leather is a man-made material with a leather look. The boots ship without a box.

The supplier gives no heel or platform height in centimetres, so we do not quote one. In the photos the sole is clearly thick, with the heel a little higher than the forefoot. We see no side zip in the pictures; plan on lacing them.

Who they're for

For you if you want a few centimetres of height you can walk in all day. A platform lifts the whole foot, so the step stays flat compared with a heel of the same height.

They also suit anyone who finds black combat boots too hard. Brown softens the look and sits easily next to jeans, camel and cream.

Materials and build

The supplier names PU leather and rubber and does not say which part is which. The supplier says nothing about the lining, and makes no claim about rain or cold. We add none.

The photos show a line of pale stitching running around the boot just above the sole, in the style of a welt.

Size: true to size, 35 to 42

The supplier advises your usual size and gives a foot length for each: 22.4 cm for size 35 up to 25.9 cm for size 42, converted from inches and rounded to one decimal.

Measure your foot standing. If you wear thick socks in winter and sit between two sizes, the larger one gives you the room. Laces let you tighten the fit around the ankle either way.

Styling: bare legs now, tights later

The photos show them with bare legs and a short hem, which works while it is warm enough. In autumn, add black tights and a knit dress, or tuck straight jeans into the collar.

City days, concerts, a casual office, weekend walks on paved paths. The supplier gives no outdoor or work-safety rating, so these are fashion boots.

Care

The supplier gives no care instructions. PU is usually cleaned with a soft damp cloth. Let wet boots dry in the air, away from a heater, and brush dirt out of the tread once it is dry.

The wow detail: brown on black

Most boots of this type are black from top to sole. Here the brown upper sits between two black bands, the collar above and the sole below. The contrast makes the shape easier to read and gives an everyday boot a bit of colour.
