This is a two-piece set: a short grey bomber jacket for women with a zip front, and a pair of wide-leg trousers in the same dark grey. The collar and the cuffs are black rib, which gives the jacket its bomber outline and a clean edge against the grey.

Both pieces are 100% polyester, as the supplier declares it. Sizes run from XS to 2XL, and you buy the jacket and trousers together.

The piece: a tracksuit idea in a tailored fabric

The shape comes from sportswear. A zip jacket with rib trim and a pair of easy trousers with an elastic waist is, on paper, a tracksuit. What changes it is the fabric. In the photos it is a flecked grey with a fine woven texture, closer to a suit than to jersey.

The jacket stops at the hip. It has dropped shoulders, a silver-tone zip and two large patch pockets set low on the front, big enough for your hands. The trousers sit high with a gathered elastic waistband and have a pressed seam down the front of each leg.

We sell it as "No brand": the supplier gives no maker name, so we describe what the spec sheet, the size chart and the photos show.

Who it's for

For you if you like to get dressed once in the morning and not think about it again. The set looks planned, because it is, and the elastic waist means you can sit through a train ride or a long meeting without noticing your trousers.

It also suits you if you want separates. The jacket goes over jeans; the trousers go with a knit. Sizes run from XS (88 cm bust) to 2XL (114 cm bust).

Fabric and feel: polyester with a woven look

The supplier lists the material as polyester, and under our single-fibre rule we write that as 100% polyester. The supplier does not give a percentage breakdown, a weight or a lining, so we can't tell you how thick the fabric is or how warm the jacket is.

What the photos do show is the surface. It is a mottled grey with a fine texture that catches the light, and it hangs with some body: the trousers hold their curved shape instead of collapsing at the knee.

Fit and silhouette: short on top, full below

The proportions are the point of this set. The jacket is short, from 59 cm long in XS to 64 cm in 2XL, and on the model it ends at the hip. The trousers are long and roomy, 99 cm to 104 cm from waist to hem, with legs that curve out below the hip and narrow slightly at the ankle.

For the trousers, go by your waist and hip. The waist runs from 66 cm (XS) to 92 cm (2XL) and the hip from 94 cm to 120 cm. The elastic gives you some room at the waist. For the jacket, remember the dropped shoulder: it is cut to sit loose, so compare the bust figure with a jacket you already own. The supplier asks you to allow 1-3 cm difference.

Styling: together or apart

The supplier styled it with a white crop top and white trainers, jacket worn open. That is the easy version, and it works.

For the office, zip the jacket halfway over a black turtleneck and swap the trainers for loafers. At the weekend, wear the jacket alone over wide blue jeans. The trousers work on their own with a fitted black knit, which lets the curve of the leg do the talking. Silver jewellery picks up the zip.

Occasions

Office days, travel days, a museum visit, lunch with a friend, the school run. It is a set for days when you are on your feet and still want to look dressed.

Care: the label decides

The supplier gives no care instructions, so follow the label sewn into each piece. As a general habit for polyester sets: close the zip before washing, wash both pieces together so the grey stays the same, and hang them to dry rather than tumble drying.

The wow detail: the curve of the trouser leg

Look at tile three. The trouser leg bows out between hip and ankle, then comes back in. With a pressed seam running down the front, it gives the trousers a shape you would expect from a much more expensive pair, and it makes the short jacket look even shorter. That contrast is why the set works.
