This is a long brown ribbed scarf from Awama, made for the cold half of the year. The supplier describes it as warm, light and soft, woven in Poland from a fluffy blend with kid mohair and wool in it.

It comes in one size and in three shades of brown. In the photos, wrapped once around the neck, both ends still hang down to the upper thigh. So yes, it is a lot of scarf.

The piece: three models, one scarf

Awama lists this scarf as three models, 220841, 220842 and 220843, one for each shade. The descriptions are the same apart from a word or two: a warm, long scarf with a ribbed texture that sits well around the neck and under a coat.

What you see in the photos matches that. The ribs run the full length, the surface has a soft haze from the mohair, and the scarf is wide enough to spread over your shoulders when you want more cover. Near one end there is a small dark label.

One thing the maker does not give is the size in centimetres. We would rather say that than guess a number from a photo.

Who it's for

For you if you cycle to work in January and want your neck and chest covered without a second layer. Also for you if you like a scarf you can wear two ways: looped high under the chin on a cold morning, or hanging open over a coat when the shop is warm.

The blend contains 22% wool and 16% mohair. If those fibres itch on your skin, this is probably not your scarf, and it is better to know that now.

There are no fringes or tassels in the photos; the ends are finished straight.

Fabric and feel: four fibres, listed in full

The composition is 40% acrylic, 22% polyamide, 22% wool and 16% mohair. The supplier's text speaks of kid mohair, the finer hair of young angora goats. The table only says mohair, so we keep the percentage and leave it there.

Mohair is what gives the surface its fuzzy halo. The supplier calls the scarf light yet warm and lists a weight of 450 g. In the photos the knit looks airy and holds its ribs, even where it is bunched up around the neck.

Size and length: one size, and long

There is one size. The maker's data has no length or width, so the photos are our only guide. Worn once around the neck, the ends fall to the upper thigh on the model.

How that looks on you depends on your height and on how you tie it. Need the exact length before you order? Ask us and we will request it from the supplier.

Styling: over a coat or over a sweater

The photos show both. Over a light grey coat, the darkest melange shade gives contrast and the long ends break up the length of the coat. Over a brown knitted sweater, the taupe shade blends in, tone on tone.

A third option from the photos: lay it open over your shoulders under a long sleeveless waistcoat, so the scarf fills the neckline and the ends run down the front. With a camel or cream coat, any of the three browns will work. With black, we would pick the lightest shade so the ribs stay visible.

When to wear it

The supplier puts it with everyday and elegant outfits alike, and we see it the same way. Wear it on the bike, at the Christmas market, on the walk to the station. Because it fits under a coat collar, it also works over a tailored coat for a dinner out.

It is a warm scarf for real winter days. On a mild autumn afternoon it will be too much around your neck, and then it is nicer worn open.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no care instructions, so go by the label sewn into the scarf.

Knits with mohair in them generally do better when you air them between wears and store them folded instead of on a hook, where the weight can pull the ribs out of shape.

The wow detail: three browns that are really different

The maker calls every shade "brown", and our colour buttons still say brown, brown 2 and brown 3. The photos tell you more. One is a dark grey-brown melange, one is a brown so deep it is nearly black, and one is a light taupe melange. Look at the photos before you pick, because the name will not help you.
