Faux leather trousers you pull on like joggers

These faux leather trousers by Rue Paris look sharp and wear easily. There is no zip and no button. The back of the waistband is elasticated, so you pull them on, and a belt lets you set the waist where you want it.

The waist is high, the leg tapers to above the ankle and there is a pocket on each side. The maker lines them, which is welcome in a fabric like this. They come in one size, 95 cm long.

Rue Paris uses the same description for all five models: soft faux leather, a combination of polyester and polyurethane, in a casual style for everyday wear and work.

The colour names need some help. Black is black. "Red" is a deep burgundy in the photos. Then there are three models the maker simply calls brown, and the photos show three different shades: a dark chocolate brown, a light beige and a camel. The maker's data does not tell us which number is which shade. Go by the photo that appears when you select an option, and ask us if you want it confirmed before you order.

Who it's for

For you if you like the leather look and don't want the stiffness or the animal skin. This is polyester and polyurethane, soft and lined.

It suits you if you want comfort at the waist. An elastic back and no fly make these as forgiving as loungewear, while the pleats and the belt keep them office-ready.

Fabric and feel: soft faux leather with a lining

The composition is 55% polyester and 45% polyurethane. The maker calls it soft faux leather. In the photos the surface is matte with a low sheen, closer to nappa than to patent, and it folds softly at the knee and the hip.

The maker describes the lining as insulated and says it makes the trousers suitable for cooler days. A lining also means the faux leather doesn't sit directly on your skin. The composition of the lining is not given.

Fit and size: one size, roomy at the hip

The maker's table lists one size with a length of 95 cm and a hip width of 110 cm. The waist is left empty, which fits a waistband that is elastic at the back and adjusted with a belt.

On the model the cut is easy at the hip and thigh, helped by the front pleats, and it narrows from the knee down. The hem ends above the ankle. With 110 cm at the hips, most sizes up to about L have room. Faux leather doesn't stretch like a knit, so if your hips measure more than that, these will be too tight.

Styling: soft on top

The photos pair the trousers with soft things: a white ruffle blouse on the dark brown, a fine black knit on the beige and the camel, a checked blazer over the burgundy. That contrast is the trick. A smooth, slightly shiny bottom half looks good under matte, textured tops.

Black pointed pumps appear in every photo and lengthen the cropped leg. In winter, ankle boots that meet the hem work as well. For the weekend, a chunky jumper half tucked in and white trainers make the black pair casual.

Occasions

The maker names everyday wear and work. In black or dark brown these pass in most offices. The burgundy is a good choice for dinners and drinks in the colder months, when the lining earns its keep.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no care instructions, so go by the label sewn into the trousers.

In general, faux leather is happier with a damp cloth than with a hot wash, and heat from a dryer or a press can damage the surface. Hang the trousers rather than folding them, so the surface doesn't crease.

The wow detail: the seam at the knee

Each leg has a seam running straight across the knee. It is a detail taken from biker trousers, and it breaks up the smooth surface so the leg doesn't look like one flat panel. You see it clearly on the black and the camel pair.
