Figl Ribbed Cotton Turtleneck with Long Sleeves

A cotton turtleneck in a light rib, cut close to the body

This is the thin cotton turtleneck you wear under almost everything from October on. Figl made it in a lightly ribbed knit of 98% cotton with 2% spandex, with long sleeves and a collar that stands up around the neck.

It is 61 cm long in every size, which on the model means it ends at the hip. You can choose from white, grey, beige and navy blue, in sizes S to XL.

Figl sells this top through a Polish fashion wholesaler, which files it under sweaters and turtlenecks. The supplier's own description is short: a cotton turtleneck with long sleeves, made of lightly ribbed material, in a classic cut. We like that it doesn't promise more than that.

Each colour has its own model number, from 203355 to 203358, but the cut, the fabric and the size table are identical. So if the grey fits you, the navy blue will fit the same way.

One note on colour. The supplier's data calls the lightest version beige, while the photos clearly show a white top. We list it as white, because that is what you see.

Who it's for

For you if you get cold at the neck but find thick knits too warm indoors. A thin rib like this sits flat under a blazer, a pinafore dress or a chunky cardigan and doesn't add bulk at the shoulders.

It also suits you if you prefer cotton against the skin. The fit is close, so it works for women who like a top that follows the body. If you want room around the waist, this is the wrong shape for you.

Fabric and feel: 98% cotton with a little stretch

The composition is 98% cotton and 2% spandex. Cotton is what you feel; the spandex is there so the rib springs back after you pull the top over your head.

A rib knit has fine vertical lines, and in the photos you can see them most clearly on the grey and the beige. Ribbing stretches sideways and then closes again, which is why a top this narrow on the table can still fit around a body. The maker gives no fabric weight. From the photos it looks thin enough to layer, and in white you should expect a light bra to be the safer choice.

Fit and silhouette: close, and 61 cm long

The size table lists a chest of 68 cm in S, 70 cm in M, 72 cm in L and 74 cm in XL. Those are small numbers, and each size adds only two centimetres. We read them as the top measured unstretched, since a ribbed knit opens up when worn, but the maker doesn't confirm that.

What it means for you: the sizes sit close together, so going one size up changes little. Pick your usual size if you like it snug. The length doesn't change at all. It is 61 cm from S to XL, so on a longer torso the hem will sit higher than it does on the model.

Styling: the layer under everything

The photos show it the simplest way, with straight blue jeans and heels. That works, and the white one with jeans is hard to get wrong.

We think it earns its place as a layer. Wear the navy blue under a camel blazer for the office. Put the grey under a sleeveless knitted dress when the weather turns. The beige disappears nicely under a darker cardigan, so only the collar shows.

A fine chain worn over the collar looks good on the darker colours. Tuck the hem into a high waistband or leave it out; at 61 cm it is long enough for both.

Occasions

This is an everyday top. Wear it to work under a jacket, on a Saturday in town with jeans, or at home under a big cardigan. On a cold terrace it closes the gap between your coat collar and your chin.

It can go to a dinner too: the navy blue with wide black trousers and earrings is enough. For a party where you want to stand out, you will want something else on top of it.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data we receive has no care instructions, so go by the label sewn into the top. We would rather say that than guess a temperature.

Some habits help with any ribbed cotton: wash it inside out with similar colours, pull it gently back into shape while damp, and dry it flat or on a wide hanger so the rib doesn't stretch lengthwise. Wash the white one separately from the navy blue.

The wow detail: a collar that stands on its own

Look at the collar in the photos. It isn't folded over. It stands straight up around the neck in a single layer and keeps its line from the front, the side and the back. That makes it less bulky than a folded turtleneck, and it is the reason this top sits so neatly under a shirt collar or a blazer lapel.
