These flared trousers with high waist by Italy Moda are cut like smart bell-bottoms and worn like joggers. The waistband is elastic, the fabric stretches, and there is no zip or button to deal with.

The fabric is 55% polyester, 40% viscose and 5% spandex. There is one size, 99 cm long. You can choose from ten colours, and every pair comes with two detachable brooches on the pockets.

Italy Moda files these under sweatpants and describes a bell-bottom style for everyday wear and work. The maker lists a high waist with an elastic waistband, wide legs, side pockets, a smooth plain fabric and additional brooches that you can take off.

In the photos the pockets sit at the front and have pointed flaps. A round gold-tone brooch is pinned to each flap. A stitched crease runs down the front of each leg, which is what makes the trousers look tailored.

One size has a limit at the hips. The table gives 96 cm, and the cut is close through the hip and thigh before it flares. If your hips are wider than that, these will be tight where it shows.

Fabric and feel: viscose blend with stretch

The composition is 55% polyester, 40% viscose and 5% spandex. The maker says the blend is soft and flexible. In the photos the fabric is smooth and fairly dense, with enough weight to make the flare hang straight.

The darker blue and the light grey have a slight melange look. The other colours are solid.

Fit and silhouette: long, fitted, then wide

The table gives a length of 99 cm, a hips width of 96 cm and a waist width of 66-116 cm. We read the waist range as the elastic at rest and fully stretched.

At 99 cm these are long trousers. On the model, in heels, the hem covers most of the shoe. If you are shorter, plan on a heel or a hem. The table also labels 31 cm as inseam, which on trousers this long is more likely the rise. It matches the high waist in the photos.

Styling: a short top and a heel

A flare looks longest with a heel under it and a short or tucked-in top above it. The photos show exactly that: crop tops, block-heel sandals, pointed pumps.

For work, tuck in a shirt and add a cropped blazer, as with the black pair in the last photos. Take the brooches off when you want the trousers plain, and pin them back on for an evening out.

Occasions

The maker names everyday wear and work. The neutral colours are office colours. The pink and the light blue are for weekends, birthdays and holidays.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data we receive has no care instructions, so please go by the label sewn into the trousers.

One thing is certain without a label: take the two brooches off before washing. They are pinned on, and a pin in the machine is bad for the fabric and for the drum.

The wow detail: brooches you can remove

Most trousers come with their decoration sewn on. Here the two gold-tone brooches are separate pieces, so you decide. With them, the trousers are dressed up. Without them, they are plain flares. You could even pin them on a jacket.
