Wide-leg palazzo trousers that feel like sweatpants

These wide-leg palazzo trousers by Relevance look dressed and wear like loungewear. The maker calls them palazzo-style sweatpants: a high elastic waist, pleats at the front, side pockets and legs that fall wide to the floor.

They come in one size, 103 cm long, in pale blue and in pink. One thing to know before you order: you get the trousers. The matching top in the photos is not included.

Relevance lists these as tracksuit trousers, models 209836 and 209838. The description is about the trousers alone: a soft blend of viscose, polyester and elastane, a smooth fabric, wide legs and what the maker calls a slightly oversized character.

The waist is high and held by an elastic band. There is no zip and no button; you pull them on. At the front the maker adds decorative pleats, and in the photos you can count two on each side, pressed in below the waistband.

In the photos the model wears a short-sleeved top in the same colour, which makes it look like a set. It is styling. The supplier ships one pair of trousers per order, and that is what we sell here.

Who it's for

For you if you want the comfort of sweatpants on days when sweatpants will not do. The elastic waist and the stretch are there, and the pleats and the long wide leg make them look like proper trousers.

Because they come in one size, check the numbers first. The waist stretches from 66 to 108 cm and the hips measure 110 cm. At 103 cm long they are made to be worn long, as in the photos, where the model wears heels.

The maker does not say where the trousers are produced, so we leave the country of production open.

Fabric and feel: half viscose, with stretch

The composition is 50% viscose, 45% polyester and 5% spandex. The maker describes the blend as soft and the fabric as smooth, and says it gives freedom of movement. Viscose is the fibre that gives a fabric its drape, which fits what the photos show: the legs hang in long, calm lines and move as one piece.

The maker gives no fabric weight. From the photos we would call it a medium fabric, closer to a ponte than to a thin jersey, but that is our impression and not a supplier fact.

Fit and silhouette: one size, long and wide

One size means the elastic does the fitting. The maker's table gives a waist of 66 to 108 cm, hips of 110 cm and a length of 103 cm. If your hips measure more than 110 cm, these will be snug where they are meant to be loose.

The table also lists an inseam of 34 cm. That cannot be the inside leg of trousers this long, so we read it as the rise, which would match the high waist. Length is the thing to check. On a shorter frame, 103 cm will touch the floor in flat shoes.

Styling: sporty or dressed

The maker suggests both sporty and more elegant combinations. In the photos it is the elegant side: a top in the same colour, tucked in, and heeled mules that almost disappear under the hem.

For a sporty look, wear the blue pair with a white T-shirt and chunky trainers. For the office, the pink pair with a cream blouse and a blazer in a darker tone looks calm and grown-up. Keep the top short or tucked in so the pleats and the high waist stay in view.

Occasions

The maker made these for everyday wear, and that is where they belong: working from home, a day at the office, a long train ride, a lunch that turns into an afternoon. With heels and a dressy top they also carry a birthday dinner.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no care instructions, so follow the label sewn into the trousers.

As a general habit with fabrics that contain viscose: wash cool, skip the dryer and hang the trousers by the waistband. The weight of the legs pulls most creases out.

The wow detail: pleats on sweatpants

Sweatpants do not usually have pressed pleats. These do, and it changes how they read. From the waistband the pleats send a sharp line down each leg, so from across the room you see tailored trousers. Only you know there is an elastic band doing the work.
