Think of a rain boot that grew a long knitted sock. The foot of these Solea boots is smooth and matte, and from the ankle a close-fitting knit runs up to above the knee.

The maker lists the outer material as fabric, the inside as lined, the sole as flexible rubber and the heel at 4 cm. The colour is green; in the photos it is a dark grey-green.

The supplier calls this style Scarlett and describes green fabric boots with a matte finish, an almond toe and a flexible rubber sole. They are easy to slip on and lined, and meant for autumn and winter.

The photos show what the text leaves out. The shaft is knitted with a raised geometric pattern and a ribbed top edge. There is a short zip on the inner side at the ankle. The sole is thick with a deep tread.

A word on the colour. An earlier title on this page said grey. The supplier says green, and the photos sit between the two. Expect a muted grey-green, darker on the knit than on the foot.

Who they're for

For you if you want the long line of an over-the-knee boot and the walkability of a flat ankle boot. A 4 cm heel on a thick sole is easy to walk on.

A knitted shaft follows the leg and adapts to different calf widths better than a stiff shaft does. The maker gives no shaft height or width, so we can't put numbers on that.

Materials and build: fabric upper, rubber sole

The maker's material field says fabric, and the description speaks of a flexible rubber sole and a lining. No fibre content is given for the knit.

The foot part looks smooth and coated in the photos, a little like a wellington, but the maker calls the whole outer material fabric and makes no claim about rain. We won't make one either.

Size and dimensions: insole length per size

Insole length per size: 23 cm in 36, 24 cm in 37, 24.5 cm in 38, 25 cm in 39, 25.5 cm in 40 and 26.5 cm in 41. Mind the two full-centimetre steps, between 36 and 37 and between 40 and 41.

The boots are lined, which takes a little room, and you may want a sock in winter. If your foot is right at the limit of a size, go up.

Source: the maker's size table, which gives the insole length per size. Stand on a sheet of paper, mark heel and longest toe, measure the distance and allow a few millimetres of room.

Styling: short hems, long knits

The photos show them under a camel knitted dress that ends above the top of the boot. That gap of a few centimetres of leg is the classic way to wear over-the-knee boots.

They also work over skinny jeans or leggings with a long jumper. The grey-green goes well with camel, cream and black.

Occasions

The maker places them in autumn and winter. With the tread sole they are city and weekend boots: markets, walks, a day of errands. They are less of an office boot, unless your office is relaxed.

Care: brush the knit, wipe the foot

The maker gives no care instructions. In general, a knitted shaft is cleaned with a soft brush once dirt has dried, and a smooth foot part with a damp cloth. Roll the shafts down loosely or lay the boots flat when you store them, so the knit keeps its stretch.

Below the ankle it is a chunky ankle boot with a tractor sole. Above it, it is a patterned knee sock. The join between the two is the whole idea.
