These black leather knee-high boots by Step In Style are the plain kind you can walk in all day. The shaft is 37 cm high, the heel is 3 cm, and a zip on the side gets you in and out.

The maker states leather for the upper and for the footbed. The toe is rounded and the heel counter is stiffened. One thing to know before you order: the boots have no warm lining.

In the photos the leather has a pebbled grain on the shaft and a smoother finish on the foot. The shaft stands a little away from the leg and ends just below the knee on the model. The supplier files the boots under over-the-knee, but 37 cm is knee height on most legs, and the photos agree.

The gallery also shows a brown and a beige suede version. Both are gone at the wholesaler, so the black leather pair is the one we deliver.

Who they're for

For you if you want tall boots without a heel to manage. Three centimetres is enough to lift the back of the foot and low enough for a full day in town.

They suit you less if you want winter boots for frost. With no warm lining these are boots for autumn, for spring and for mild winter days with a good sock.

Materials and build: leather inside and out

There is no composition table for footwear in the wholesaler's data. What it has is two attribute lines, and both say leather: one for the upper, one for the footbed. We pass that on as the maker's statement.

A leather footbed is pleasant in a boot you wear for hours, because leather takes up moisture from the foot. The stiffened heel counter keeps the back of the boot in shape. The pebbled grain you see in the photos also hides small scuffs better than a smooth, polished leather would.

Size and dimensions: measure your foot

The size table gives the insole length per size, in steps of half a centimetre: 23.5 cm for size 36 up to 26 cm for size 41. Stand on a sheet of paper, mark your heel and your longest toe, and measure the distance. Your size is the one whose insole is a little longer than your foot.

The shaft is 37 cm high, measured by the maker. Hold a tape measure along your leg from the floor to see where that lands. On the model it stops just under the knee.

Styling: bare legs or skinny jeans

The photos show the boots with bare legs and a short white dress. That contrast works well: a light dress and a dark, plain boot.

In colder weather, wear them over slim jeans or thick tights with a knitted dress that ends above the shaft. A long coat that covers the top of the boot makes one clean line from shoulder to floor.

Occasions

These are everyday boots. Wear them to work, to the market, on a city trip with a lot of walking. The maker calls the cut classic and says it goes with many outfits, which is a fair description of a plain black riding-style boot.

For rain, keep in mind that the maker makes no water claim, and neither do we.

Care: what we know and what we don't

The maker's data has no care instructions. If there is a leaflet or label in the box, follow that first.

As a general habit with leather boots, wipe off dirt with a damp cloth, let them dry away from the heater and use a cream or wax made for black leather now and then. Stuff the shafts with paper or boot shapers so they don't fold at the ankle.

The wow detail: the grain

Look at the second photo. The shaft has a deep, irregular pebble pattern and the foot is almost smooth. That change of surface is all the decoration there is: no buckle, no strap, no logo. We think the boots are better for it.
