A longline zip-up hoodie you can wear as a dress

This longline zip-up hoodie by Relevance is cut long enough to stand on its own. On the models the front ends around the knee and the back drops lower, to the calf.

The fabric is 90% cotton with 10% spandex. A zip runs the full length, there is a hood and two side pockets, and the hem is rounded where you would expect a straight rib. It comes in two sizes, S/M and L/XL, and five colours.

The piece: an extended sweatshirt by Relevance

The supplier calls it an extended sweatshirt and lists the parts: a hood, long sleeves, a zip closure, slip pockets and a lower edge finished in a half-circle. That last point is what you see first. The two front panels curve away from the zip like the tails of a shirt.

We sell five colours: grey, black, beige, navy blue and brown. In our colour menu the beige is called "Taupe" and the brown is called "Taupe 2"; the maker's names are the ones we use in this text.

The photo set also shows the hoodie in teal blue, mint green and dark green. Those three are in the pictures because the maker shot them together. They are not in our menu, so please pick from the five colours above.

Who it's for

For you if a normal hoodie always feels too short. This one covers your hips and thighs, so it works over leggings and over bare legs with boots.

It also suits you if you want one layer for the in-between weeks, when a coat is too much and a cardigan too little. The supplier suggests it for everyday wear and for sport. We would say: for the walk to the gym and the coffee after.

The maker calls the pockets slip pockets, while the photos show a small pull at the pocket opening. We can't tell from the pictures whether the pockets zip shut, so we don't claim it.

Fabric and feel: 90% cotton, 10% spandex

The maker gives 90% cotton and 10% spandex. That is a high share of cotton for a sweatshirt, with enough spandex to let the fabric give when you sit or reach.

In the photos the fabric looks like a thick sweatshirt knit that holds the curve of the hem instead of hanging limp. The maker does not give a fabric weight and does not say whether the inside is brushed, so we leave both open.

Fit and silhouette: two sizes, roomy cut

There are two sizes. S/M has a chest of 82-86 cm and an outside sleeve of 59-61 cm. L/XL has a chest of 91-96 cm and an outside sleeve of 63-65 cm.

Those chest numbers are small next to how roomy the hoodie looks on the models, with its dropped shoulders. The table does not explain how the chest was measured and gives no body length. If the size matters a lot to you, ask us before you order and we will check with the supplier.

Styling: closed as a dress, open as a coat

The models wear it zipped up as a dress, with sock boots or chunky ankle boots. That works because the rounded hem shows a bit of leg at the front.

Open, it becomes a long layer over jeans and a T-shirt. White trainers keep it sporty, as in the mint and navy photos. If you wear it over leggings, match the legging to the hoodie for one long line, or go black under any of the five colours.

Occasions

This is a hoodie for ordinary days. Wear it for the school run, a walk with the dog, a day of working from home or the trip to and from a workout. On a long train or car ride the length is a plus, because it covers you when you curl up.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no care instructions, so go by the label sewn into the hoodie.

Two habits help with any zip-up sweatshirt: close the zip before washing so the teeth don't catch other clothes, and turn the piece inside out.

The wow detail: a shirt-tail hem on a hoodie

Most hoodies end in a straight band. This one ends in two curves that meet at the zip and rise towards the side seams, while the back hangs lower. From the side you see the line step down from front to back. It is the reason the hoodie reads as a dress when you close it.
