A wide-leg jumpsuit with a wrap V-neck, in eleven colours

This wide-leg jumpsuit by Bicotone does the work of a long dress and lets you walk like you are wearing trousers. The top crosses over into a V-neck, the sleeves are short and flared, and a wide belt marks the waist. The legs fall to the floor.

It closes with a concealed zip. The maker's table puts the length at 145 cm in size 34 and 150 cm in size 44. There are eleven colours, from beige and black to a bright fuchsia.

The piece: one design, eleven model numbers

Bicotone has made this jumpsuit for several seasons and gives every colour its own model number. The description is the same each time: a jumpsuit with a seam at the waist, wide legs, flared sleeves that fall over the shoulders, a wide belt and a covered zip.

There are two differences between the colours, and you should know both. The first is the fabric. Seven colours are 70% viscose and 30% polyester. The four newer ones, sold here as red, green 2, blue and pink, are 93% polyester and 7% spandex. The second is the lining: the supplier mentions one for beige, white, black and violet and says nothing about it for the rest.

A word on the colour names, which come from the supplier. In the photos the two greens are a deep bottle green and a pale sage (green 2), blue is a light sky blue and pink is a pastel. The versions the supplier lists as violet and red show up in the photos as a bright fuchsia and a deep plum. Check the photo of the colour you pick.

Who it's for

For you if you have a wedding, a dinner or a graduation coming up and you would rather not wear a dress. A jumpsuit like this gives you the long line of a gown and the ease of trousers on the dance floor.

It also suits you if you like a defined waist. The belt sits high and the legs widen from the hip, so the eye goes to the middle. The V-neck is deep in the photos. If that is more than you want, a small safety pin on the inside or a lace top underneath closes it up.

Fabric and feel: two compositions, depending on the colour

Beige, white, black, green, navy blue, brown and violet are 70% viscose and 30% polyester. Red, green 2, blue and pink are 93% polyester with 7% spandex, so those four have stretch from the spandex.

In the photos the fabric is smooth and falls in long, straight lines down the leg. It holds the folds of the bodice without looking stiff. The supplier gives no fabric weight.

If you want a lining, choose beige, white, black or violet. Those are the colours for which the supplier mentions one.

Fit and silhouette: high waist, legs to the floor

The table below is the maker's, and it applies to nine of the eleven colours. Size 36 is 146 cm long with a chest of 90 cm and a waist of 70 cm. Size 42 is 149 cm long with a chest of 102 cm and a waist of 82 cm. The length is measured over the whole jumpsuit.

Beige and white are the exception. For those two the maker lists a smaller table, with a chest of 84 cm and a waist of 64 cm in size 36, and no length. That is a difference of a full size, so for beige or white we would compare the numbers with your own measurements with extra care.

Not every colour comes in every size. Beige, white and black stop at 40, blue and pink start at 36, and only red and green 2 run from 34 to 44.

On the model the legs cover the shoes even with heels. If you are shorter than average, plan for heels or a trip to the tailor.

Source: the maker's size table for nine of the eleven colours. For beige and white the maker lists a smaller table: chest 80, 84, 88 and 92 cm and waist 60, 64, 68 and 72 cm for sizes 34 to 40, without a length. The tables do not say whether these are garment or body measurements.

Styling: a clutch, heels and little else

The photos keep it simple. A small clutch or a quilted handbag, pointed heels that only show at the toe, long earrings. With a neckline this open and legs this wide, the jumpsuit fills the frame on its own.

For a daytime wedding we like the sage green or the light blue with nude sandals. For an evening party the black or the bottle green with gold-tone jewellery is hard to get wrong. A cropped blazer over the shoulders works for the walk there, because it ends where the belt begins.

Occasions

This is an occasion piece. Wear it as a wedding guest, to a gala dinner, a Christmas party, a graduation or an anniversary. In the darker colours it also works for a formal evening at work.

One practical note for long events: the zip is concealed and the jumpsuit is one piece, so allow a little extra time in the bathroom.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no care instructions, so go by the label sewn into the jumpsuit. Because the composition differs by colour, the label may differ too.

As a general habit, hang a jumpsuit like this on a hanger with clips at the waist or folded over the bar, so the long legs don't crease.

The wow detail: the belt tied at the back

From the front the belt is a flat, wide band. Turn around and it is tied, with two long ends that hang down over the trousers. The back of the bodice is plain and high, so those ends are the one thing that moves when you walk away.
