A striped cotton pyjama set for warm nights

This is a two-piece summer pyjama: a short cami top and a pair of high-waist shorts. The supplier declares the fabric as 100% cotton, a light striped poplin, and both pieces are edged in white lace.

It comes in one colour, a light blue with thin white and navy stripes, in sizes S, M and L. The top is cropped, 27 cm long in size S, so it sits just above the waistband of the shorts.

The top hangs straight and loose from a gathered neckline. Thin straps hold it up, and where each strap meets the front there is a small white bow. The straps are adjustable, and in the detail photos you can see the slider on the strap. The back is gathered on elastic at the top.

The shorts sit high on the waist and have a short button placket at the front, like a pair of boxer shorts. White lace runs around each leg opening, the same lace as on the hem of the top. We sell the set without a brand, because the supplier data names no maker.

Who it's for

For you if you sleep warm and want as little fabric as possible on a summer night, but still like your nightwear to look pretty. The stripes and the lace make it feel a bit dressed up for something you only wear at home.

The sizes are small to medium: the shorts waist goes from 68 cm in S to 76 cm in L. If you are between sizes, look at the hip measurement too, because the shorts are meant to sit loose.

Fabric and feel: light cotton poplin

The supplier describes the fabric as a lightweight, soft woven cotton and, elsewhere, as striped cotton poplin. It declares cotton as the only fibre, and we list it as 100% cotton on that basis. The CJ title also mentioned nylon, but the description does not, so we leave it out.

Poplin is a thin, smooth, tightly woven fabric. It does not stretch the way jersey does, so the fit comes from the cut and the elastic. The lace is a white trim with an open floral pattern.

Fit and silhouette: short, loose, high on the waist

The top is short, 27 to 28 cm long depending on the size, and loose from the neckline down. On the model it ends just above the shorts, so a little skin shows. The shorts are short as well, 29 cm in S and 31 cm in L, and wide at the hip: 104 cm in S.

The bust is given as a range, 84-90 cm in size S, which suggests some give in the gathered neckline. The supplier measured everything flat and says to allow 1-3 cm difference.

Styling: stripes, lace and something to pull on

At home it needs nothing else. For a slow Sunday morning, add an oversized white shirt or a light cardigan over the top and you can open the door to the post without a second thought.

White or navy slippers pick up the stripe colours. If you like sets, keep the lace theme and add a white robe.

Occasions

Summer nights, first of all. It also packs small for a holiday or a weekend away, and it makes a sweet gift for a friend who is moving in with someone or going on a trip.

Care: follow the label

The supplier gives no care instructions, so follow the label sewn into the garment. We would rather tell you that than guess. Lace is the delicate part of any set, so a laundry bag is a good idea whatever the label says.

The wow detail: the lace that ties it together

The same white lace runs along the hem of the top and around both legs of the shorts. When you wear the two together, the lace lines up in two thin white bands, and a simple striped cotton set looks like it was made as a pair. The little bows at the straps repeat the white once more.
