These snow boots have a padded, quilted shaft of 23 cm, a wedge of 4 cm hidden in the sole and a drawstring at the top to close the shaft around your calf. A zip on the inner side gets you in and out.

They are made of faux leather and textile and lined with a soft material. You can choose white or black, in sizes 36 to 41.

The boots reach us through a fashion wholesaler in Poland under the brand name Solea: model 222352 in white and 222353 in black. The maker's own text calls them the Sophie snow boots from Gemre, so you may find that name on the box.

The maker describes a low wedge that gives stable support, a drawstring at the top of the shaft that keeps cold air and snow out, an interior finished with a soft material and an outsole with increased grip. We pass these on as the maker's statements. We have not tested the boots on ice ourselves.

Who they are for

For you if you want a winter boot that covers the lower leg and still looks as light as a trainer. The wedge adds 4 cm without a separate heel, so the whole sole touches the ground.

Materials and build: faux leather and textile

The maker lists the material as imitation leather plus fabric, and the footbed as fabric. In the photos the padded shaft is textile and the part around the foot is smooth faux leather: matte on the white pair, glossy on the black.

The inside is described as finished with a pleasant, soft material that helps keep your feet warm at lower temperatures. The data does not name the lining fibre.

Size and fit: check the insole

The insole measures 23.5 cm in size 36 and grows by half a centimetre per size to 26 cm in size 41. That is on the short side: a 38 has 24.5 cm.

Measure your foot standing, from heel to longest toe. If the result is equal to the insole of your usual size, go one size up, because a lined boot and a winter sock both take room. The drawstring adjusts the top of the shaft, and the zip means the fit around the ankle can stay close.

Styling: over leggings or under a coat

In the photos the boots are worn over dark leggings, which is how the quilted shaft shows up well. The maker also suggests jeans or ski pants, and coats, parkas and down jackets on top.

The white pair lightens a dark winter coat. The black pair disappears under black trousers and lets a bright scarf or hat do the talking.

Occasions

The maker names everyday walks, the way to work or school, winter shopping and weekend getaways. They are boots for cold, dry pavements and for snow days in town.

Care: what we know and what we don't

The maker's data has no care text. If there is a care note in the box, follow it. We would rather tell you that than guess.

General habits: wipe the faux leather with a soft damp cloth, brush dry dirt off the quilted shaft, and let wet boots dry at room temperature with the zip open. Keep them away from the heater.

The wow detail: the drawstring

At the top of the shaft a cord runs through the rim and ends in a toggle. Pull it and the opening closes around your leg, over leggings or over jeans. Next to it hangs a small striped ribbon in red, white and dark blue, the one spot of colour on the boot. It is a detail borrowed from ski wear, and it makes the boots look ready for the mountains even on the way to the supermarket.
