These metallic platform ankle boots have two halves. The foot is faux leather in a dark pewter with a metallic sheen. The shaft is a black ribbed stretch panel that closes around the ankle like a sock.

Underneath is a 5 cm platform with a deep tread. The shaft is 14.5 cm high, there is no zip, and the sizes run from 36 to 41.

We buy this pair from a fashion wholesaler in Poland. Its brand field says Solea. Its description calls the boots "Berniece from Gemre". We pass on both names as we received them; the box may carry either.

The description itself is long and enthusiastic. Stripped of the praise, it says this: ankle boots on a platform, with a metallic finish and a soft, flexible upper that makes them easy to put on.

Who it's for

For you if you want height without a heel. A platform lifts the whole foot by the same amount, so your foot stays level, and the supplier points out that this is easier over a long day than a classic high heel.

And for you if zips and laces annoy you. The stretch shaft opens when you pull the tab and closes again by itself.

The supplier does not name the material of the sole or of the stretch shaft.

Material and feel: a muted metallic

The upper is faux leather. The metallic finish in the photos is a dark, slightly brushed pewter. It catches light on the toe and along the curve of the heel, and it is far from a mirror shine. If you were worried about silver disco boots, these are calmer than that.

The footbed is fabric. The shaft looks like a ribbed knit, though the supplier does not describe it.

Size and fit: go by the insole

The supplier gives the insole length per size: 23.5 cm for 36, 24 cm for 37, 24.5 cm for 38, 25 cm for 39, 25.5 cm for 40 and 26 cm for 41. Each size adds half a centimetre. Measure your foot from the heel to the longest toe and pick the size whose insole is a little longer.

This table runs short next to other boots in our shop, where 26 cm is usually a 40. Between sizes, take the larger one. The shaft is 14.5 cm and hugs the ankle, so it stays put under a trouser leg.

Styling: let the sock shaft show

The supplier suggests fitted jeans, leggings, dresses and skirts. Cropped or cuffed trousers work well, because the black shaft then reads as a sock between hem and boot.

With a dress, black tights blend into the shaft and leave the pewter foot as the accent. Grey knitwear picks up the metallic tone. We would keep the rest of the outfit matte and let the boots be the one thing that shines.

Occasions

The supplier names work, meeting friends and an evening out. They are everyday boots with a bit of shine, good for autumn in town and for a party where you plan to stand and dance.

Care: a soft cloth

The supplier's data has no care instructions. As a general habit for faux leather with a metallic finish, wipe it with a soft damp cloth and skip polish and abrasive sponges, which can dull the surface. Let the stretch shaft dry flat if it gets wet.

The wow detail: three textures

Ribbed black knit, brushed metallic, chunky black tread. Each part of this boot has its own surface, and the pewter band in the middle ties the two black ones together. It looks considered from every side.
