These platform snow boots are the short, slip-on kind: a low shaft that stops at the ankle, a soft lining and a 5 cm platform under the whole foot. The upper is imitation suede.

You can pick black, brown or beige, in sizes 36 to 41. The wholesaler sells them under the name Solea.

The piece: three colours, one boot

The wholesaler lists the boots as models 222019, 222020 and 222021 with Solea as the brand. In its own description the same boot is called Mouna by Gemre. We give you both names as we received them, because we can't tell from the data which one is on the box.

The attribute list is short. Upper: imitation suede. Footbed: fabric. Platform height: 5 cm. The description adds a soft lining and an upper that wraps around the ankle.

The photos show the rest. The sole is thick and ridged and has the same colour as the upper. There is a pull tab at the heel and a seam that runs down the centre of the front.

Who they're for

For you if you like the look of a chunky short boot with leggings or wide jeans, and you want a few centimetres of height without a heel. A platform lifts the whole foot evenly, so your foot stays flat.

If you need tested winter footwear for hiking or for ice, look for boots with stated specifications. The maker of this pair gives none for grip or temperature.

About the lining: the maker's text says fur and does not say whether it is real or imitation. We don't want to guess, so the page says only that it is a soft pile lining. Ask us if you need to know for certain and we will put the question to the supplier.

Materials and build: imitation suede on a thick sole

The upper is imitation suede, a synthetic material with a brushed, matte surface. In the photos it looks soft and even, without the shading you get in real suede.

The footbed is fabric. The maker gives no material for the sole or the lining. The supplier's text says a lot about warmth and about walking on snow, but it comes without a specification, and we leave those promises out. What we can say is that a lined boot on a 5 cm sole keeps your foot further from a cold pavement than a thin-soled shoe does.

Size and dimensions: 5 cm of platform

The size table gives the insole length: 23.5 cm for size 36, then half a centimetre more per size up to 26 cm for size 41. Measure your foot from heel to longest toe and choose the size with an insole a little longer than that.

A lined boot feels snugger than an unlined one. If you plan to wear thick socks and you are between two sizes, the larger one is the safer pick. The platform is 5 cm high. The maker does not give the height of the shaft; in the photos it ends at the ankle bone.

Styling: leggings, jeans, big knits

The maker suggests leggings, jeans, tracksuits and oversized sweaters, and that is how this shape is usually worn. In the photos the model wears cream knitted leg warmers that slouch onto the top of the boot.

Black goes with everything dark. The brown is a warm camel shade that looks good with blue jeans, and the beige is pale enough to wear with cream or grey joggers. With wide trousers, let the hem fall over the shaft so only the platform shows.

Occasions

These are boots for cold, dry days in town: the school run, a walk to the shops, a Christmas market. They slip on quickly, which is half their charm on a dark morning.

Imitation suede and slush are not friends. On wet days, a smooth boot will look better for longer.

The maker's data has no care instructions. If there is a leaflet or label in the box, follow that first.

As a general habit with suede-look uppers, let mud dry and brush it off with a soft brush, and keep the boots away from the heater while they dry. Do not put them in the washing machine unless the label says you can.

On many platform boots the sole is a different colour from the upper. Here the brown boot has a brown sole and the beige boot a beige one. The whole boot becomes one block of colour, and the platform looks lighter than its 5 cm.
