A patterned pencil skirt for days when plain feels flat

Figl keeps this patterned pencil skirt simple. It has a straight, close cut and a covered zip, and it leaves the talking to the fabric. You choose between three patterns: navy blue with a paisley-like motif, a blue zigzag and a grey zigzag.

The fabric is 100% polyester. Sizes run from S to XL, with a waist of 66-69 cm in S and 78-81 cm in XL. On the model the hem ends just above the knee.

The piece: three patterns, one skirt

The maker's description is two sentences long. A simple, elegant pencil skirt with a covered zip. A skirt made of fabric with an interesting pattern. Both sentences are the same for models 77136, 77137 and 77138, and the size table is the same too.

Model 77136 is the navy blue one, with a beige motif that looks like paisley mixed with flowers. The other two are what the supplier calls multicolor. In our shop they are the buttons Blue and Gray: a fine zigzag in blue tones and the same zigzag in grey and white.

In the photos of the two zigzag skirts the model wears a jacket in the same fabric. The jacket is a separate Figl piece and is not part of this page. You order the skirt only.

Who it's for

For you if your working week needs a skirt and you are tired of black. A small pattern does what a plain fabric can't: it hides a crease after a long sit and it gives a white shirt something to stand next to.

The cut is close, so this is a skirt for someone who is comfortable in a pencil shape. If you prefer room around the hips, a flared skirt will suit you better.

The maker does not say where the zip sits, whether there is a slit at the back or whether the skirt is lined. The photos don't settle it either. Ask us if one of these decides it for you.

Fabric and feel: patterned polyester

The composition is 100% polyester, with no stretch fibre listed. In the photos the fabric holds a clean, straight line from hip to hem, which points to a cloth with some firmness. The zigzag versions look textured, as if the pattern is part of the weave. The maker does not confirm that, so take it as an impression.

Without a stretch fibre in the mix, the skirt gets its fit from the cut alone. That makes the size choice more important than with a stretch skirt.

Fit and silhouette: straight and close

The maker's table gives ranges and the ranges read like body measurements. Size S is for hips of 92-95 cm and a waist of 66-69 cm. Size M covers 96-98 and 70-73 cm, L covers 99-102 and 74-77 cm, and XL covers 103-106 and 78-81 cm.

Measure your own hips at the widest point and pick the size whose range includes that number. If your waist and hips land in different sizes, go with the hips; a pencil skirt that is tight there will ride up. The table gives no length. We can only tell you what the photos show: just above the knee on this model.

Styling: let the pattern lead

The navy version is photographed with a plain white tank top and nude pointed pumps. That is all it needs. With a pattern below, the top can stay quiet: a white shirt, a fine cream knit, a navy cardigan.

The zigzag versions lean more towards the office. A plain blazer in navy or black sits well over the blue one, and the grey one takes almost any colour on top. Tights in a matching dark shade carry all three into winter.

Occasions

This is an office skirt first. It fits a presentation, a client lunch and a job interview. The navy paisley one also works at a family dinner, where the zigzags might look a little strict.

It is less suited to days with a lot of cycling or stairs. A straight skirt without stretch limits your stride, and it is fairer to say so here than to let you find out.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data we receive has no care instructions, so please go by the label sewn into the skirt. We would rather say that than guess.

As a general habit, close the zip before washing and hang the skirt by the waistband to dry. It keeps the straight line that the cut depends on.

The wow detail: a zip you don't see

A covered zip is a small decision with a visible result. Nothing interrupts the pattern, so the motif runs across the skirt in one piece. On a patterned fabric that matters more than on a plain one, and it is the detail Figl chose to name first.
