This flared check skirt by Nife does two things. The high waistband and its belt draw a clear line at your middle, and from there the skirt opens out in soft pleats to just above the knee.
The pattern is a small black and white check. The skirt is 60 cm long in every size, from 36 to 44, in a blend of polyester and viscose with a little stretch.

The piece: model 216884 by Nife
Nife sells its clothes through a fashion wholesaler in Poland. The maker's text is short. It describes a flared skirt, a style it says never goes out of fashion, with a high waist and a belt, to wear with shirts and T-shirts.
One thing needs explaining. The supplier's colour field says "black", and so does our colour button. The photos show a black and white check, and that is what we describe here. From a distance the check blends into a soft grey.
Who it's for
For you if you want a work skirt that is neither tight nor long. A flared shape leaves room to sit, cycle and climb stairs, and a hem just above the knee is easy in most offices.
It also suits you if you like to mark your waist. The belt does that without any effort from you.

Fabric and feel: polyester and viscose
The composition is 64% polyester, 34% viscose and 2% spandex. Viscose gives a woven fabric a softer hand and a better fall than polyester has alone, and the spandex adds a little give at the waist.
In the photos the fabric holds its pleats and the hem stands slightly away from the legs, so it has some body. The maker gives no fabric weight.
Fit and silhouette: only the waist has to fit
The skirt is fitted at the waistband and loose everywhere below it. The maker's table gives a waist of 70.5 cm for size 36, 74.5 cm for 38, 78.5 cm for 40, 82.5 cm for 42 and 86.5 cm for 44. Each size adds four centimetres.
The length is 60 cm in all sizes. Measure from where you want the waistband to sit, which on this skirt is high, down your leg to see where the hem lands. On the model it stops just above the knee.

Styling: blouse and boots
The maker suggests shirts and T-shirts. The photos go with a cream blouse tucked in, once with nude pumps and once with tall cream boots. The boots are our favourite: they close the gap between hem and shoe and make the outfit look planned.
In colder weather, add black tights, a black roll-neck and a dark coat. A small check like this one works as a neutral, so a red bag or a mustard jumper will sit well next to it.
Occasions
The maker names work and everyday wear. We agree, and would add a job interview, a lunch with family and an open day at school. It is a skirt that looks neat without looking formal.
Care: follow the label
The maker's data has no care instructions, so go by the label sewn into the skirt. Fabrics with viscose in them tend to prefer a gentle wash and can shrink in heat, so check the label before the first wash and take the belt off first.
The wow detail: the belt in the same check
The belt is cut from the skirt's own fabric. It disappears into the waistband when you look quickly and shows up as a second, finer line when you look again. You get the effect of a belt without a strip of another colour cutting you in half.
