This short pencil skirt with front slit comes from Lenitif. The front is made of two panels that cross over each other, and where they part at the hem you get a small opening shaped like an upside-down V. It is a neat office skirt with one detail that keeps it from being plain.

The fabric is 65% polyester and 35% viscose. You can choose grey, green or navy blue, in sizes S to XL. On the model the hem sits well above the knee.

Lenitif is a womenswear label we buy through a fashion wholesaler in Poland. Behind this page sit three model numbers, one per colour: 114317 is grey, 114318 is green and 114319 is navy blue. The supplier uses the same description and the same size table for all three, so apart from the colour they are the same skirt.

That description is short. It speaks of a pencil line with a slightly asymmetric cut, an asymmetrical opening at the front, a covered zip at the back, a metal logo plate on the front and slanted pleats at the hip line. The photos show each of those things, and we list them below.

One word needs a note. The supplier calls it a belted model. In the photos there is a fitted waistband and no loose belt, so expect a waistband.

Who it's for

For you if you like a pencil skirt for work and find most of them a bit stiff. The crossed front and the slit give your legs room when you walk, and they make the skirt look less like a uniform.

It is short. If you prefer your skirts at or below the knee, this one will feel brief, and the opening at the front shows a little more leg when you sit. With tights that is easy to live with. Bare-legged, it is a choice.

The supplier does not say whether the skirt is lined and does not give a length. If either matters to you, ask us before you order and we will check.

Fabric and feel: polyester with a good share of viscose

The maker lists 65% polyester and 35% viscose and calls the fabric comfortable. That is all the supplier says about it. The composition lists no stretch fibre, so do not count on stretch.

In the photos the cloth looks like a smooth suiting fabric that holds its shape. The slanted folds at the hip stay crisp and the hem hangs straight. The grey has a fine melange look, the green is a muted olive shade, and the navy is dark and even.

Fit and silhouette: fitted waist, short hem

The table below is the maker's and applies to all three colours. It gives ranges. Size M has a waist width of 70-73 cm and a hips width of 96-98 cm. Sizes S and M share the same hip range, so between those two the waist decides.

Because the fabric has no stretch listed, go by your waist first and make sure your hips fall inside the range. The folds at the hip give a little ease there, and the crossed front opens as you move. The table has no length. All we can tell you is what the photos show: on the model the skirt ends well above the knee.

Source: the maker's size table, the same for all three colours. It gives no length and does not say whether these are garment or body measurements, so compare them with a skirt that fits you.

Styling: keep the top close to the body

In the photos every top is tucked in, and that is the way to wear it. The waistband and the little metal plate are part of the design, and a loose top would hide both. The grey is shown with a fitted camel top with a stand-up collar, the green with a sleeveless cream blouse, and the navy with a black top with sheer sleeves.

For the office, try the grey with a fine-knit black polo neck and opaque tights. The green is good with cream or off-white and tan shoes. Navy with a striped shirt is hard to get wrong. Heeled pumps or ankle boots both work; flat loafers make it more relaxed.

Occasions

This is a skirt for working days: the office, a client meeting, a presentation. It also suits a dinner after work, when you swap the shirt for something with a bit of shine and leave the rest as it is.

For a very formal setting, check your dress code first. The length is short and the front opens a little when you sit down.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data we receive has no care instructions, so please go by the label sewn into the skirt. We would rather say that than guess.

Two habits help with a skirt like this. Close the zip before washing so it does not catch on other clothes, and hang the skirt by the waistband to dry so the folds at the hip fall back into place.

The wow detail: the opening at the hem

Most pencil skirts put the slit at the back, where you never see it. Here it sits at the front and a little off-centre, because the two front panels cross on their way down. Standing still, you see a clean line and a small V of leg. Walking, the panels move apart and the skirt shows how it is built.
