A bodysuit solves one small daily problem: your top stays tucked in. This long-sleeve bodysuit by Figl is a plain one, made of 95% viscose and 5% spandex, with a wide neckline and slim sleeves to the wrist.

It comes in several calm colours. Stock at the wholesaler is low and mostly in XL, so look at the size buttons first.

The piece: a basic by Figl

Figl describes it in two short sentences: a classic bodysuit with long sleeves and a boat neckline, to wear with tight jeans. We like that brevity. It is a basic and it does not pretend to be more.

One note on the neckline. The maker says boat neck, but in the photos it is a wide, rounded opening that dips lower than a true boat neck would. Expect a generous scoop that shows the collarbones.

Each colour has its own model number. Grey is 203119, green 203120, pink 203121, brown 203122 and the white one 203124. The earlier text on this page called the bodysuit cotton; the maker's composition is viscose, and that is what we state now.

Who it's for

For you if you wear high-waisted jeans or skirts and are tired of tucking your top back in. A bodysuit gives a smooth line at the waistband.

It is also a good layer under a blazer or a pinafore dress, where a normal T-shirt bunches up. Because the fit is close, it helps if you are comfortable in fitted tops.

Fabric and feel: viscose with stretch

Viscose jersey feels cool and smooth on the skin and drapes more softly than a cotton rib. With 5% spandex it stretches in every direction, which a bodysuit needs to move with you when you sit and reach.

In the photos the fabric is thin and matte. The grey has a light marl. Thin jersey in pale colours can show what is under it, so a smooth bra in a skin tone is wise under the white.

Fit and silhouette: close, with small numbers in the table

The maker's table gives a chest and hip measurement of 74 cm for S, 78 cm for M, 82 cm for L and 86 cm for XL. Those are not body sizes. They look like the garment measured without stretch, and the jersey does the rest.

The length runs from 71 cm in S to 72.5 cm in XL, so there is only a centimetre and a half between the smallest and the largest size. If you have a long torso, that is the number to watch. Between two sizes we would take the larger one, because a bodysuit that is too short pulls at the shoulders.

Source: the maker's size table, the same for every colour. The numbers are small because the jersey stretches; they read like measurements of the unstretched garment.

Styling: the quiet layer

The maker suggests tight jeans, and that is the obvious match. High-waisted jeans, a belt, done. The wide neckline leaves room for a chain or a scarf.

We would also wear it under a slip dress when the weather turns, or with a pleated skirt and loafers. The taupe brown and the khaki green are easy with beige and camel; the salmon pink looks fresh with white jeans.

Occasions

This is an everyday piece. Wear it to work under a blazer, at the weekend with jeans, or as a base layer on a cold day.

It has no shaping panels in the maker's data, so do not expect it to hold you in. It is a top that stays put.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no washing instructions. Follow the label sewn into the bodysuit.

Viscose in general is weaker when wet, so many people wash it cool on a gentle cycle and dry it flat or on a hanger. That is general advice, the label decides.

The wow detail: the neckline

On a plain bodysuit the neckline is the whole design. This one is cut wide, almost to the edge of the shoulders, and curves down softly at the front and the back. It makes a simple long-sleeved top look a little more open, and it sits flat under a jacket without a collar fighting for space.
