From the front, this black bodysuit by Kalimo looks like a fitted top with a high neck and long sheer sleeves. The back is another matter: a large cut-out leaves it bare down to the waist, under a band of lace that closes with three buttons.

The body is an elastic microfibre of 87% polyamide and 13% spandex. It fastens at the bottom and comes in S to XL.

Fabric and feel: microfibre with 13% spandex

The composition is 87% polyamide and 13% spandex. The maker calls the body fabric a pleasant, elastic microfibre. Thirteen percent spandex is a lot, which is what lets a bodysuit sit close without seams digging in.

In the photos the front is smooth and fully opaque, the sleeves are sheer, and the lace has a floral pattern. The supplier lists the weight at 270 grams.

Fit and silhouette: close, chosen by body measurements

The maker gives body ranges. S is for a chest of 84-89 cm and hips of 91-95 cm. M covers 90-94 and 96-100 cm, L covers 95-99 and 101-105 cm, and XL goes to a chest of 100-104 cm and hips of 106-110 cm.

With a bodysuit, torso length matters as much as width, and the table says nothing about it. If you have a long torso or you are between two sizes, take the larger one.

Styling: under a jacket, as the maker says

The maker's suggestion is the right one: a blazer on top. Add high-waisted trousers or a pencil skirt, and the cut-out ends just above the waistband.

With high-waisted jeans and heels it becomes a going-out top. Wear your hair up if you want the back to be seen. The lace cuffs replace bracelets, so keep your wrists bare.

Occasions

Wear it to a dinner date, a party, a concert, New Year's Eve. Under a closed jacket it can also sit through a working day and go straight on to drinks.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no washing instructions, so follow the label sewn into the bodysuit.

Lace and mesh snag easily. A laundry bag and a gentle cycle, or a wash by hand, are the careful choices. Close the three buttons first so they do not catch on the mesh.

Everything at the back hangs from one strip of lace across the shoulder blades, closed with three small buttons. Below it there is nothing until the waist. The contrast with the covered front is the whole idea of this bodysuit, and the maker says so with a wink: you decide when it is neat and when it is not.
