This skirt and crop top set by Venaton is two pieces that are meant to be worn together. You get a fitted skirt that ends just above the knee and a short sleeveless top with a triangular cut-out on each side. Between the two, a narrow strip of skin shows.

The supplier calls the fabric suede. The composition is 95% polyester and 5% spandex, so it is a textile with a suede look. It comes in green, black, beige and brown, in sizes S to XL.

The piece: one Venaton set, four colours

Venaton is a womenswear label we buy through a fashion wholesaler in Poland. Four model numbers sit behind this page, one for each colour, and the supplier describes all four with the same sentence: an elegant suede set with a fitted skirt before the knee and a strappy blouse with triangular cut-outs on the sides.

The photos show how that works. The top has a high round neck and narrow straps that leave the shoulders bare. A band runs around its lower edge, and above that band the fabric is cut away at each side in a triangle. An exposed metal zip runs down the back. The skirt is straight and close to the body, with a slit at the centre back.

Who it's for

For you if you like the idea of a matching set and do not mind showing your waist. The cut-outs and the cropped length put the middle of your body on view, and the top leaves your shoulders and arms bare. It is a going-out outfit more than a desk outfit.

You can also split it. The skirt on its own is a plain pencil skirt that works with a shirt or a knit, and the top goes with high-waisted trousers.

The supplier does not say how the skirt closes or whether either piece is lined. Ask us if you want to know before you order.

Fabric and feel: suede look, made of polyester

We want to be clear about the word suede. The supplier uses it in the description, and the composition table says 95% polyester and 5% spandex. So this is a woven or knitted textile finished to look like suede. It is no animal hide.

In the photos the surface is matte with the slightly brushed, uneven tone you know from suede. The spandex gives the fabric some stretch, which helps with a skirt cut this close to the body.

Fit and silhouette: close to the body, cropped at the waist

The table below comes from the maker. For black, beige and brown, size S has hips of 98 cm, a chest of 86 cm and a waist of 74 cm, and each size up adds 4 cm. For green, the maker lists S with the same numbers as M. That looks like a mistake in the supplier's data, so if you want green in S, ask us first.

The length column says 42/52 for every size. The table does not explain the two numbers. With a short top and a longer skirt, 42 cm for the top and 52 cm for the skirt is the likely reading, but that is our reading. Both pieces fit close, so choose by your hips for the skirt and check the chest for the top.

Source: the maker's size table for black, beige and brown. For green, the maker lists size S with the same numbers as M (102, 90 and 78 cm). The table does not say whether these are garment or body measurements.

Styling: the set does most of the work

In the photos the set is worn with strappy heeled sandals, nude with the green and the beige, black with the black and the brown. Nothing else is added, and that is a fair guide. Top and skirt in one colour and one texture already make a complete outfit.

If bare shoulders feel like too much, put a blazer or a short jacket over it and leave it open so the cut-outs still show. On a cooler evening, add tights and ankle boots. A small bag on a chain is enough.

Occasions

Wear it for a dinner date, drinks with friends, a birthday party or a night out dancing. In summer it suits a terrace evening or a holiday dinner.

The two pieces worn apart go further. The skirt can go to the office with a blouse, and the top is good for a festival day with wide trousers.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data we receive has no care instructions, so please go by the labels sewn into the two pieces.

One practical tip for the top: close the metal zip before washing, so the teeth do not rub against the brushed surface of the fabric.

The wow detail: two triangles at the waist

The cut-outs are small, and they change the whole top. Because the band below them stays in place, the triangles look like they were drawn on your sides with a ruler. From the back you see the long metal zip between your shoulder blades, and the back of the set ends up as interesting as the front.
