Figl Two-Piece Set: Open Jacket and Mini Skirt with Scalloped Edges

A two-piece set with a wavy edge on both pieces

This two-piece set from Figl is a short open jacket and a mini skirt in the same fabric. What makes it different from an ordinary skirt suit is the edge: the jacket front and the skirt hem are both cut in scallops, a row of soft waves.

The jacket has 3/4 sleeves and no button. The fabric is 65% polyester and 35% viscose. You can order it in pink, green or navy blue.

Figl calls it an unusual set, and for once the word fits. The jacket is collarless and stops around the waist. It is made to hang open, so whatever you wear under it becomes part of the look. In the photos that is a plain white top, which is not included.

The skirt is short and straight, and its hem repeats the scallops of the jacket. Worn together the two wavy lines sit a hand apart, one at the hip and one at the thigh.

The gallery still shows a light blue version. The maker has stopped that colour, so it cannot be ordered. The three colours on sale are pink, green and navy blue. The green is a muted olive in the photos.

Who it's for

For you if you like the ease of a matching set and want it to have some character. You get dressed in one decision, and the scalloped edge does the rest.

The skirt is a real mini. If you prefer more length, you may end up wearing the jacket more often than the skirt, which is a fair use of a set too.

The maker does not say how the skirt closes or whether either piece is lined, and the front-view photos do not show it.

Fabric and feel: polyester with viscose

The maker lists 65% polyester and 35% viscose. Viscose usually softens a polyester fabric and takes away some of the shine, and that matches the photos: the cloth looks matte, with a fine texture.

It also has enough body to hold a curved edge. Scallops in a limp fabric would curl. Here they lie flat on the hip and stand clear at the hem. The supplier gives no fabric weight and does not mention stretch, so we will not promise any.

Fit and silhouette: short on top, short below

The size table gives body ranges. Size M is for a chest of 89 to 92 cm, a waist of 70 to 73 cm and hips of 96 to 98 cm. Because the jacket hangs open, the skirt is the piece that has to fit, so let your waist and hips decide.

There are no lengths in the maker's data. From the photos: the jacket ends around the waist and the skirt at upper to mid-thigh. If you are between sizes, the larger one gives the skirt a little more ease when you sit.

Styling: one set, a few ways apart

The photos keep it simple with a white top and pointed pumps. That is how I would wear it to work, maybe with tights in the navy version.

Split the set and you get more out of it. The jacket over a slip dress or with high-waisted jeans gives a plain outfit a finished edge. The skirt with a tucked-in striped shirt and loafers is a good Saturday look. Keep necklaces short, because the jacket front already frames the neckline.

Occasions

The maker suggests it for many occasions and leaves it at that. Our reading: the pink is for spring events, a christening or a graduation. The navy is the office colour and the one for a job interview. The green sits between them and works for dinner as well as for a day of meetings.

Care: follow the labels

The maker's data has no care instructions, so follow the labels sewn into the jacket and the skirt. If you press the set, do the scalloped edges from the inside with a pressing cloth in between, so the curves stay crisp and do not get shiny.

The wow detail: the scallops

Straight hems are easy to sew. A scalloped edge has to be cut and finished curve by curve, and it only looks right when every wave is the same size. On this set the waves run down both jacket fronts and all the way round the skirt. It is the one detail people will ask you about.
