These are men's oxford shoes by RECOBA: lace-up, low-cut, with a small round toe and a rubber sole. The upper is microfibre faux leather with a polished finish.

You choose black or brown, in EU sizes 39 to 44. The brown pair has a brushed, two-tone look in the photos, darker at the toe.

The piece: a plain, smart lace-up

The shape is the classic one for a suit. The lacing is closed, with five pairs of eyelets and thin round laces, and the front is smooth without a toe cap. In the photos the toe is narrow and slightly squared off at the tip, a little sharper than the supplier's "small round toe" suggests.

There is a low block heel and a thin dark sole edge. The insole is printed with the RECOBA name, which is the maker.

Materials: microfibre faux leather on a rubber sole

The supplier lists the upper as microfibre, faux leather, and the sole as rubber. Faux leather is a man-made material. It wipes clean with a damp cloth, and it will not age the way hide does.

The supplier does not say what the lining is made of and gives no heel height.

Fit: sizes and conversion

The shoes come in EU 39 to 44. The supplier gives a conversion table to UK, US and other systems, which you find below. It is a general table and not a measurement of this shoe, and the supplier gives no width.

A narrow toe like this one can feel snug across the front of the foot. If you have wide feet or are between sizes, we would take the larger size.

Styling: black for the suit, brown for the rest

Black is the formal choice, for a dark suit at a dinner or a ceremony. In the photos it is worn with slim black trousers that end just above the shoe, and that is the right length for it.

The brown pair, with its two-tone finish, goes well with navy or grey trousers and with dark jeans and a blazer. A belt in a similar brown ties it together.

Occasions

Weddings and graduations are the obvious ones. They also work for Christmas dinner with the family and for the first day in a new job, when you want to look like you made an effort.

Care

The supplier gives no care instructions. As general practice for faux leather shoes, wipe them with a soft damp cloth and let them dry away from a heater. Wax polish is made for hide and is not needed here. Shoe trees or paper help the shoes keep their shape between wears.

The wow detail: the brown finish

The brown pair is not one flat colour. In the photos it runs from a warm cognac on the sides to a much darker brown at the toe and along the seams, as if it had been brushed by hand. It gives a new shoe the depth of an older one.
