Long Quilted Coat with Detachable Fur-Trim Hood

A long quilted coat to the knee, with a hood you can take off

This long quilted coat covers you to the knee and closes with a zip up to a high collar. It has a synthetic filling and a lining, and the supplier describes it as a coat for autumn and winter days.

The hood comes off, and so does its fur trim, so you decide how much coat you wear. The photos show it in black, navy blue and a dark grey-green, in sizes S to XXL.

The coat comes from Factory Price, a label sold through a Polish fashion wholesaler. Each colour has its own model number. The description and the size table are the same for all three.

One thing we want to be clear about. The supplier's text calls it a down jacket, and in the same paragraph says the filling is synthetic. So this is a padded coat with synthetic filling. It is not down.

The supplier calls the third colour green. In the photos it reads as a dark grey with a green cast, close to anthracite. Our colour button says dark grey for that reason.

Who it's for

For you if you cycle or walk to work and want your thighs covered as well as your back. A coat that stops at the knee does that, and it still lets you move.

It also suits you if you like one coat for everything. The supplier places it in a casual style for everyday wear and for work. With the hood off it looks cleaner over office clothes; with the hood and fur trim on it is a weekend coat.

Closer look: what the supplier's data and the photos show

The supplier writes "fur" and doesn't say what it is made of. The only composition given for the coat is 100% polyester. If you need certainty about the trim, ask us and we will check before you order.

Materials and feel: polyester with a synthetic filling

The supplier lists the coat as 100% polyester, with a synthetic filling and an inner lining. According to the supplier the filling gives warmth on colder days and the lining adds a layer of insulation. There is no temperature rating and no fill weight in the data, so we won't put a number on it.

In the photos the outer fabric has a soft matte surface, without the wet shine some padded coats have. The supplier makes no claim about rain, and neither do we. Treat it as a coat for cold, dry days and take an umbrella for the rest.

Size and fit: check the chest and the sleeve

The size table gives three measurements per size. In S the chest is 82 cm, the sleeve is 49 cm along the inside and 59 cm along the outside. Each size up adds two centimetres to the sleeve; XXL ends at a chest of 100 cm and an outer sleeve of 67 cm.

Those chest figures are small for a padded coat that has to go over a jumper, and the table doesn't explain how they were taken. Our advice: measure a winter coat you own across the chest and compare. If you plan to wear thick knits underneath, look at one size up. The table has no body length. The supplier says knee-length, and on the model the hem does sit at the knee.

Styling: two coats in one

The photos show two directions. The black coat is worn open over a turtleneck, a short skirt and chunky ankle boots. The navy blue and the grey-green go over a white knit and wide grey trousers with heeled boots.

Both work. For weekdays we would take the hood off, zip the coat to the collar and add a knitted scarf in a lighter colour. At the weekend, put the hood and trim back on and wear it with jeans and flat boots.

A long coat like this likes a narrow leg or a straight trouser under it. Very wide skirts bunch up inside.

Occasions

This is a coat for ordinary cold days. Wear it on the bike to work, on the school run, on a walk along the beach in January, or standing at the side of a football pitch on Saturday morning.

The zipped pockets keep your keys and phone where you put them. The supplier names autumn and winter as its seasons, and that matches what we see.

Care: follow the label

The supplier's data has no care instructions, so follow the label sewn into the coat.

Two general habits for padded coats: take the fur trim off before any wash, and close all zips first so they don't catch the lining.

The wow detail: the hood comes apart twice

Most hooded coats give you one choice, hood up or hood down. Here the supplier lists the hood as detachable and the fur trim as detachable too. That gives you a coat with a full trimmed hood, a coat with a plain hood, or a clean high collar with nothing behind it. We like the plain version for the city.
