These knee-high fold-over boots have a shaft that is turned down over itself, all the way to the ankle. The fold falls over the heel, so what you see is a soft column of material and a pointed toe.

They are slip-on boots, and the supplier describes them as insulated for cooler days. They come in taupe, black and brown, in sizes 36 to 41.

The boots are sold under the label Step In Style through a Polish wholesaler. The supplier describes boots with a rolled-up shaft that overlaps the heel, set on a stable pillar heel, with pointed toes, for the autumn and winter season.

A note on the heel. The supplier calls it a pillar or column heel. In the side photos it has the shape of a wedge that runs under the foot, hidden by the fold. We call that a wedge, and you can judge from the photos.

The three colours don't share one finish. The taupe and the black pair look matte and brushed. The brown pair is smooth, with a soft sheen.

Who it's for

For you if you want one pair of boots that changes a plain outfit. A fold-over shaft is a strong shape, and it does most of the styling for you.

The shaft stands wide around the leg in the photos, which helps if fitted knee boots are usually tight on your calves. We have no shaft width in centimetres, so we can't promise a fit there.

Materials and feel: what we can and can't say

The supplier's data has no composition for these boots. We won't guess at one. Our earlier title named a material, and we have taken that out because nothing in the supplier's data supports it.

What the photos show is the surface. The taupe and the black have a matte, brushed look that takes the light softly. The brown is smooth and slightly glossy and creases in sharper folds. The supplier says the boots are insulated for comfort on cooler days.

Size and fit: go by the insole

The supplier gives the insole length per size: 23.5 cm for 36, 24.5 cm for 37, 25 cm for 38, 25.5 cm for 39, 26 cm for 40 and 26.5 cm for 41. Stand on a sheet of paper, mark heel and longest toe, and measure.

The toe is pointed, so part of that insole length sits in front of your toes. If your foot length equals the insole of a size, take the next size up. There is no zip, so your foot has to pass through the ankle of the boot. A high instep can make that tight.

Styling: short above, or tucked in

In the photos the boots are worn with bare legs and nothing else in frame, which tells you they are meant to be seen. A short skirt, a knitted mini dress or shorts over tights leave the whole shaft visible.

Skinny jeans or leggings tucked in work as well. Wide trousers over them make no sense; you would hide the one thing these boots do. Keep the rest calm: a long coat and a plain knit.

Occasions

The supplier names the autumn and winter season. Wear them for a dinner, a night out or a day in town when you feel like dressing up. With no information on the sole or on water resistance, we would keep them for dry days.

Care: check the box

The supplier's data has no care instructions and no material, so we can't advise a product. Follow whatever leaflet or label comes in the box.

One habit works for every tall boot: store them upright with something inside the shaft, so the fold doesn't set into a hard crease.

The whole boot is one idea. The shaft comes up to the knee, turns, and drops back down to the ankle, wide enough to cover the heel. From the side it looks like a trouser leg pooling over a shoe. From the front, only a pointed toe shows. People will ask where the heel went.
