A cut-out dress in two layers

At first glance this cut-out dress by Figl looks like a cropped top over a mini skirt. It is one piece. A loose top layer hangs over a fitted skirt, and at each side an opening shows a little skin between the two.

The fabric has a soft suede look and is made of 95% polyester and 5% spandex. The dress is sleeveless and comes in a dark olive, black and brown, in sizes S to XL.

The piece: a Figl dress in three colours

Figl is a Polish label that sells through a fashion wholesaler. The supplier's description is two sentences: a suede, two-layer dress, with cut-outs at hip height and a split in the upper layer at the back. Each colour has its own model number, 203138 to 203140.

Two clarifications. The supplier says "suede", but the composition is polyester and spandex, so this is a suede-look fabric and no animal skin is involved. And the colour it calls green, which is also the name on our button, is a dark olive that leans brown in the photos.

Who it's for

For you if you like the look of a two-piece and the ease of a dress. Nothing rides up or needs matching, because top and skirt are joined.

It suits you if you are comfortable with a short hem and a glimpse of waist. The openings are at the sides only; front and back stay covered.

Fabric and feel: suede look, polyester inside

The composition is 95% polyester and 5% spandex. In the photos the surface is matte and slightly brushed, with the soft, uneven shading that makes it look like suede. The spandex gives the fitted skirt some stretch.

A fabric like this has more body than a jersey, which is why the top layer hangs in a clean, boxy line. The maker's data does not mention a lining.

Fit and silhouette: loose above, fitted below

The table below comes from the maker and is the same for all three colours. Size M has a chest of 98 cm, a waist of 76 cm and hips of 98 cm; each size adds four centimetres. Chest and hips share the same number in every size.

The maker gives a length of 90 to 91.5 cm. On the model the hem sits at mid-thigh, so she is clearly tall; on a shorter woman the same dress will end closer to the knee. The table does not say whether these are garment or body measurements. With a fitted skirt, check the hips first.

Styling: bare legs or boots

In the photos the dress is worn with strappy heeled sandals and bare legs, black with the olive and the black, nude with the brown. That is the evening version.

The suede look also works in autumn. Try knee-high boots and a long coat, or opaque tights and ankle boots. A fine roll-neck underneath changes the dress completely and closes the side openings for the office.

Occasions

The supplier files it under evening dresses. We see it at a dinner date, drinks, a birthday party or a concert. It is too short and too casual in fabric for a gala; for that, our evening dresses collection has longer styles.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data we receive has no care instructions, so please go by the label sewn into the dress. We would rather tell you that than guess.

One general habit for brushed fabrics: wash them inside out, so the surface keeps its soft look.

The wow detail: the gap at the side

From the front the dress looks closed. Turn a little and a curved opening appears at the side, between the hem of the top layer and the skirt. It shows a small crescent of skin at the waist and then disappears again when you face forward. It is a quiet kind of reveal, and it is the reason to choose this dress over a plain shift.
