These double monk strap loafers are slip-ons with a strap across the instep that closes with two buckles. There are no laces; you step in and the strap sits flat over the top of your foot.

The supplier gives the upper as top-layer cowhide leather, with a cushioned insole and a rubber sole. You choose black or brown, in EU sizes 39 to 46.

The toe is rounded, with a raised seam around the front and a thin dark piping along it. The brown pair has a shaded finish that goes darker at the toe and edges, which gives it some depth in the photos. The black pair is smooth and even, the quieter of the two.

The supplier calls the shoes handmade and says a leather toe holder inside keeps the shape of the toe. We have not seen the making ourselves, so we pass that on as the supplier's description.

For you if you want something smarter than a sneaker for the office, without tying laces every morning. The buckles add a bit of detail, so the shoe still looks finished with plain trousers and a shirt.

If you mostly wear jeans, brown is the easy choice. If your wardrobe is grey, navy and black, go for black.

Materials: what the supplier tells us

The upper is top-layer cowhide leather, according to the supplier, and the sole is rubber. The insole is described as cushioned. The supplier also calls the shoe breathable. The lining material and heel height are not given; in the photos the inside is a light tan colour.

Size and fit

The shoes come in EU sizes 39 to 46. The supplier gives no size chart and no foot lengths, so go by the EU size you usually wear in loafers. A slip-on has no laces to adjust, which means the fit around the heel matters more than with a lace-up. If you are often between sizes, send us your foot length before you order and we will ask the supplier.

Styling: brown with jeans, black with grey

Brown works with blue jeans, chinos in beige or olive and a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up. Black goes with grey trousers and a dark blazer, and with black jeans for an evening out. Show a little ankle or wear thin socks; the buckles are the point and you want them seen.

Occasions

Wear them to the office, to a dinner where a sneaker feels too casual, or to a summer wedding with a light suit. They also suit a Friday drink straight from work.

Care

The supplier gives no care instructions. As general practice for smooth leather shoes, brush off dirt after wearing, use a shoe cream in the matching colour now and then, and let them dry away from the radiator if they get wet. A shoe tree helps the toe keep its shape between wears.

The wow detail: the shading on the brown pair

Look at the close-up of the brown toe. The colour runs from a warm light brown in the middle to almost dark chocolate at the edges and the seam. It makes the shoe look worn in a good way from day one, and it means small scuffs blend in rather than stand out.
