An A-line mini dress with puff sleeves and two heart buttons

This is a short A-line mini dress from the Polish label Moe. The shape is simple: a round neck, short puff sleeves and a skirt that widens a little towards the hem. What you remember afterwards are the two flaps at the hips, each closed with a small gold-tone button in the shape of a heart.

It comes in four colours: a dusty lilac, grey, light blue and pale pink. The maker's size table gives a length of 81 cm in size S and 89 cm in XXL, and on the model the hem sits at mid-thigh.

Moe calls it a mini dress in a trapeze cut. That means it is narrowest at the shoulders and gets gradually wider on the way down, so it hangs away from the waist and hips. The four colours are four separate models at the maker, and we checked each one: same cut, same fabric, same size table.

The maker describes the sleeves as short and puffy. In the photos they are gathered at the shoulder seam and end above the elbow. The flaps on the front are decorative. Moe does not call them pockets, so we don't either.

At the back there is a concealed zip, and the dress has no lining. According to the maker, the whole thing was designed and sewn in Poland.

Who it's for

For you if you like a short dress that doesn't cling. The trapeze cut leaves room around the waist and hips, which is kind after lunch and easy on days when you don't want to think about what you're wearing underneath.

It also suits you if you want something a bit dressed for the office or a family birthday without going full party dress. The sizes run from S to XXL. Size S has a chest of 89 cm and XXL has 109 cm, so have a look at the table before you choose.

The buttons are gold in colour. The maker does not say what they are made of.

Fabric and feel: a polyester and rayon blend with a little stretch

The composition is 70% polyester, 27% rayon and 3% spandex. In the photos the fabric looks woven, with a fine melange texture: up close you see lighter and darker threads, and from a distance it reads as one soft colour with a slight sheen.

Moe says the fabric drapes well and that leaving out the lining keeps the dress light and airy. We can't feel it through a screen, so take that as the maker's word. The 3% spandex gives a bit of give when you sit or reach. With no lining, pale colours like the pink and the light blue are worth trying on with the underwear you plan to wear.

Fit and silhouette: loose from the chest down

The dress fits at the shoulders and chest and then widens. You can see it in the numbers. In size M the chest is 94 cm, the waist 83 cm and the hips 101 cm. In XL those are 104, 93 and 111 cm. Each size up adds 5 cm in width and 2 cm in length.

The table does not say whether these are garment or body measurements. The safest check is to lay a dress you already own flat, measure it across the chest, double the number and compare. Because the cut is loose below the chest, the chest and shoulders decide your size here. If you are tall, look at the length too: 85 cm in size L is short.

Styling: keep the legs and shoes simple

In the photos the model wears cream slingback heels with a bow and no jewellery at all. It works because the dress already has its own decoration in the heart buttons.

For the office, try it with opaque tights and loafers, and a short jacket that stops above the flaps so they stay visible. On a warm day, bare legs and flat sandals are enough. The grey is the easiest one to wear to work. The lilac and the pink ask for a little more nerve and look good with white or cream shoes.

Skip a belt. A trapeze cut is meant to hang free, and a belt would bunch the fabric above the flaps.

Occasions

The supplier files it under day dresses, and that is how we see it too. Wear it to work, to a birthday lunch or to a baby shower in spring. With heels and a small bag it also carries a dinner date.

It is a short dress, so think about where you will be sitting. On a bar stool or a low sofa an 81 cm dress rides up, and tights or cycling shorts underneath make that a non-issue.

Care: follow the label

The data we get from the maker has no care instructions, so please go by the label sewn into the dress. We would rather say that than guess a temperature.

A few habits are safe for any dress with a zip and buttons: close the zip before washing, turn the dress inside out so the heart buttons don't knock against the drum, and hang it up straight away so the sleeves keep their shape.

The wow detail: two small hearts

From across the room this is a plain pastel shift. Then someone stands next to you and notices that the buttons on the flaps are hearts. It is a small joke on an otherwise tidy dress, and it is the reason we like this one more than the average office mini.
