This ribbed midi dress from Relevance is one long, narrow line: a round neck, long sleeves and a pencil skirt that ends at mid-calf on the model. A slit at the side gives your legs room to move.

The fabric is 90% cotton with 10% spandex. There is one size, with a total length of 115 cm according to the maker, and two colours: a camel brown and white.

Relevance is a label sold through a Polish wholesaler. The maker calls this an everyday midi pencil dress, made of a soft and stretchy blend of cotton and elastane in a smooth ribbed material. It has long sleeves, a classic round neckline and no fastening.

The photos add the slit, which the maker's text leaves out. It sits on one side of the skirt and opens from about the knee down.

Our old title promised a V-neck. Neither the maker nor the photos show one, so the title now says what the dress is.

Who it's for

For you if you like a dress that follows your body and still covers you from neck to calf. Long sleeves and a high neck make it calm. The fit and the slit keep it from being dull.

It is a one-size dress in a stretchy rib. That works across a range of sizes, but the look changes: on a smaller frame it skims, on a fuller frame it hugs. If you don't like fabric close around your stomach, this cut will not be comfortable for you.

Fabric and feel: cotton rib with 10% spandex

The composition is 90% cotton and 10% spandex. The maker describes the fabric as soft and stretchy, with a smooth rib that gives it a subtle texture. In the photos the ribs are fine and run from top to bottom, which lengthens the line of the dress.

A cotton rib breathes better than a synthetic knit and is pleasant on bare skin. The other side of that coin is that a thin, light-coloured rib can show what is under it. With the white dress, plan on skin-tone underwear without seams.

Fit and silhouette: one size, close to the body

There is one size. The maker's table gives a total length of 115 cm and a chest of 84 cm. That chest number only makes sense as the dress lying unstretched, since the rib and the spandex let it grow with you.

The table gives no waist or hip measurement and no size range, so we can't tell you up to which size it fits well. Our honest advice: compare it with a stretchy dress you own, and if you are unsure, ask us first or make use of the 14 days you have to return it. At 115 cm the hem lands at mid-calf on the model.

Source: the maker's size table, the same for both colours. The chest of 84 cm looks like the dress measured unstretched; the rib gives a lot. The table does not say so, so compare with a stretchy dress you own.

Styling: boots, pumps or sneakers

The photos show three moods with one dress. The camel is worn with black western boots, the black with pointed pumps and the white with chunky white sneakers. All three work, because a plain column of rib takes on the character of the shoes.

In autumn, add a long coat that ends near the hem, or an oversized blazer with a belt over it. A long pendant suits the high neck. We would skip a scarf, since it hides the clean line at the top.

Occasions

The maker calls it an everyday dress for many occasions. In camel with boots it goes to the office or to lunch. With heels and earrings it is ready for a dinner.

The white one looks freshest from April to September. As a wedding guest, pick the camel, for the obvious reason.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no care instructions, so the label sewn into the dress decides.

Rib knits keep their shape longer when you dry them flat. On a hanger the weight of a 115 cm dress pulls the shoulders out. Fold it over the bar of the hanger or lay it in a drawer.

The wow detail: the slit

A pencil dress this long would make you take tiny steps. The side slit fixes that, and it does something for the look too: standing still you see a closed, modest column, and with each step a strip of leg appears below the knee. The dress stays quiet and still has movement.
