This ribbed polo dress by Relevance takes the collar and the buttons of a polo shirt and puts them on a close-fitting dress with long sleeves. The maker calls it a pencil cut and says the length is just before the knee.

The fabric is 90% cotton with 10% spandex, knitted in fine ribs. It is sold in one size, 101 cm long, and in four colours: grey, black, brown and beige.

Relevance is a label we buy through a fashion wholesaler in Poland. The supplier describes all four model numbers the same way: an everyday dress with a pencil cut, long sleeves, an elegant collar and a small three-button placket, in a smooth ribbed fabric.

In the photos the placket opens into a V below the collar, and the buttons are gold-tone. There is also a slit at the side of the hem, which the supplier does not mention and which makes a narrow dress easier to walk in.

The gallery shows an olive green and a red version too. We do not sell those colours on this page. The beige has the button name Peach.

Who it's for

For you if you like a dress that shows your shape and still feels like a T-shirt. Ribbed cotton with this much stretch moves with you all day.

It comes in one size. The maker lists a chest of 88 cm, measured without stretch, and the rib opens up from there. On the model, who is slim, it sits close without pulling. If you usually wear L or above, ask us before you order so we can check how far the fabric gives.

Fabric and feel: cotton rib with stretch

The composition is 90% cotton and 10% spandex. The supplier calls the blend comfortable and the fabric smooth and ribbed. A rib knit is built from vertical ridges that pull together when relaxed and spread when stretched, so it hugs the body without a zip or darts.

Ten per cent spandex is a generous share. It helps the dress return to shape at the elbows and the seat after a day of sitting. In the photos the ribs are fine and even, and the fabric has a matte finish.

Fit and silhouette: close, to the knee

The maker gives two numbers for the one size: a total length of 101 cm and a chest of 88 cm. The supplier describes the length as before the knee. On the model the hem sits at the knee or a touch below, so where it lands on you depends on your height.

This is a body-skimming dress. Smooth underwear matters more than usual, because ribs show every line underneath. The slit at the hem keeps your stride free.

Styling: boots, as in the photos

The photos pair the dress with western-style boots in black and with cream lace-up boots. Both work because a plain, narrow dress likes a shoe with some weight.

Open one button for a relaxed collar, or close all three and add a thin belt at the waist. An oversized blazer or a long coat over it gives you an autumn outfit in two pieces. With white trainers and a jeans jacket it is weekend wear.

Occasions

The supplier calls it an everyday dress for casual outings. The collar lifts it a step above a T-shirt dress, so it also fits an office without a strict dress code, a lunch, or a parents' evening.

Long sleeves and a cotton rib make it an autumn and spring dress. In winter it layers well under a coat with tights.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data we receive has no care instructions, so please go by the label sewn into the dress.

For stretch cotton in general: wash it inside out with similar colours and dry it flat or on a line. High heat is hard on spandex, so a hot dryer shortens the life of the stretch.

The wow detail: three small buttons

On the black dress they are the only thing that catches the light: three gold-tone buttons in a short row under the collar. They turn a plain rib dress into a polo. They also give you a choice each morning, buttoned up and neat or open into a V.
