A cable-knit sweater dress you can live in

This cable-knit sweater dress by Rue Paris is a big turtleneck sweater that kept going. It is 81 cm long with a chest of 120 cm, in one size, with long sleeves and cables running down the front, the back and the arms.

Four of the five colours are knitted from 70% acrylic and 30% wool. The off-white one has a different yarn without wool, so check the table below before you choose.

Rue Paris describes the dress as a mix of comfort and casual style, with a textured knit, a long sleeve for colder days and a turtleneck. The maker gives the length as "pre-knee". On the models in the photos it ends at mid-thigh.

The colours are brown (a camel shade in the photos), black, beige and grey, all in the acrylic and wool blend. The fifth colour is listed by the maker as beige and sits under our button "White"; in the photos it is an off-white. That version is 80% acrylic, 15% polyester and 5% spandex.

It is cut wide for everyone. With a chest of 120 cm it hangs loose on a small frame and sits closer on a fuller one. If you are tall, think of it as a long sweater over leggings more than as a dress, because 81 cm does not go far on long legs.

Fabric and feel: acrylic with 30% wool, or without

Brown, black, beige and grey are 70% acrylic and 30% wool. Wool can feel prickly on bare skin, and a turtleneck sits right against the throat. If you know you react to it, wear a thin top underneath or pick the off-white version, which has no wool: 80% acrylic, 15% polyester, 5% spandex.

The photos show a chunky knit with raised cables. The supplier lists the weight at 450 grams. How soft it feels we cannot tell from data, so we leave that to you.

Fit and silhouette: one size, wide and straight

There is one size: 81 cm long, 120 cm at the chest. The shoulder seam drops onto the upper arm and the body falls straight from there, without a waist.

Measure from the top of your shoulder down 81 cm to see where the hem lands on you. That one number tells you whether you will wear it with tights or with trousers.

Styling: tights, boots, or over leggings

The photos show three ways. Bare legs with heeled ankle boots for the camel one. Shiny black leggings and lace-up boots under the beige. White knee boots with the off-white dress, which is the boldest of the three.

A belt changes it completely: cinch it at the waist and the straight shape becomes an hourglass with a blouson top. A long coat that is longer than the dress looks better over it than a short jacket. Leave the necklace at home; the turtleneck has that spot covered.

Occasions

The maker suggests everyday wear and work. We would say: working from home, a walk on a cold Sunday, the school run, a casual office, Christmas morning.

It is a relaxed dress. For a formal dinner it is too much sweater, and that is fine.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no washing instructions, so follow the label sewn into the dress. With 30% wool in four of the colours, read it before the first wash.

For any heavy knit: dry it flat on a towel. On a hanger a wet sweater dress stretches under its own weight and you end up with a longer dress than you bought.

The wow detail: cables on the back too

Many cable knits save the pattern for the front and leave the back plain. This one carries the cables all the way round. In the back view of the off-white dress you can count the twisted columns running from the neck to the hem, and the sleeves have their own. It is a small sign that nobody cut corners on the knitting.
