A flared midi dress with a boat neckline and sleeves to the elbow

Some dresses are built on proportion alone. This boat-neck flared midi dress from Awama is one of them: a wide, calm neckline, three-quarter sleeves, a fitted top and a skirt that opens in deep pleats.

It is designed and sewn in Poland, 113 to 115 cm long in the sizes we have, and the colour in stock is a light grey.

The piece: model 187118 by Awama

Awama needs three sentences for it: a flared dress with 3/4 sleeves and a boat neckline, good for many occasions, designed and sewn in Poland. The rest you can see.

We sell the grey.

Who it's for

For you if you want your knees and upper arms covered and still want a waist. This shape has worked since the fifties because it does both.

It suits office days and family occasions alike. At the moment the grey is in stock in M, L and XL.

Closer look: what the maker's data and the photos show

  • Boat neckline (maker's data); wide at the front, rounded at the back (photos)
  • 3/4 sleeves (maker's data); they end just below the elbow (photos)
  • Flared cut (maker's data); deep pleats that open from the waist (photos)
  • Fitted bodice with vertical seams (photos)
  • Hem at mid-calf on the model in heels (photos); 112 to 115 cm long (size table)
  • Designed and sewn in Poland (maker's data)

The maker does not mention a zip or a lining. If either matters to you, ask us and we will check with the supplier.

Fabric and feel: polyester and viscose with stretch

The composition is 60% polyester, 35% viscose and 5% spandex. The maker adds no words about the feel, so we describe only what the photos show: a smooth, matte cloth with enough body to hold the pleats in shape.

Viscose in a blend like this usually makes the fabric a little softer and less shiny than polyester alone, and the spandex gives the fitted bodice some stretch.

Fit and silhouette: fitted top, full skirt

The size table gives a chest of 92 cm and a waist of 72 cm in M, 96 and 76 cm in L, 100 and 80 cm in XL. The skirt has no hip measurement because it flares; your hips have room.

So choose on the waist. The dress is 113 cm long in M, 114 cm in L and 115 cm in XL. On the model that is mid-calf in heels.

Styling: pumps, and one strong accessory

The model wears plain black pumps. With the light grey, black gives contrast; nude or silver-tone shoes keep it soft.

A boat neckline shows the collarbones, so skip the necklace and choose earrings or a brooch. A narrow belt at the waist is an easy change if you want the pleats to start more sharply. In winter, add opaque tights and a short jacket that ends at the waist.

Occasions

The maker says it works for many occasions. We think of a christening, a job interview, a day at the office and a wedding where you are a guest. Grey is a safe colour for all four.

It is a daytime dress first. For an evening event, change the shoes and add a clutch.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no care instructions, so follow the label sewn into the dress.

Hang it up right after wearing. Pleats that are hung fall back into line overnight.

The wow detail: pleats that start at the waist seam

The pleats are folded in at the waist seam and then left free. Standing still, the skirt hangs in a few clean vertical lines. When you walk, the pleats open and the skirt swings. It is the movement that makes a simple dress look expensive.
